Obama to Roll Out New Health Care Strategy with Labor Officials Who Insist on Public Option

Brian Beutler

As Josh notes here, President Obama will roll out his new health care reform strategy at the AFL-CIO's annual Labor Day picnic.

At that event will Richard Trumka, who's expected to be named AFL-CIO's new president and who's really gone out on a limb, insisting that AFL-CIO will not support congressional candidates who work against the public option and will oppose a health care bill that does not include one.

Today, Trumka says he's received no assurances from the White House that Obama will stand with him.

And, indeed, it seems very much like Obama will not be going all in for a public option. We'll see what happens...but that could be a teeny bit awkward.

AFL-CIO won't back healthcare reform without public option

2. Trumka also notes, in re: public option, "I think we're going to get it."
He shrugged off the leading question from the interviewer, who asked if he'd gotten "assurances" from Obama / the White House.

3. If he was going to nix the public option, he wouldn't do it at a union picnic
This "rumor" is just another example of the media whirling dirvish for ratings. I for one, and damn sick and tired of it. In my opinion, they are damaging the country with their antics. The confusion in the populous is the direct result of the tabloid media.

I think Obama could write it in blood and they would still say that he is waivering, trying to stick it to the left, etc...

Its all I can do to watch TV, read the newspapers or websites anymore.
And FYI.... the economy is starting to turn around. Knock off the god damn gloom and doom crap!!!! Where has mature discourse and debate go to in this country?

JFK and FDR would be demonized by the media we have today who would destroy them and their agenda to benefit their bottom line and profit margins!!!!

6. The crazy thing is that piece is a TPM post. Yet look at the media spin in the last line.
Too many people on the left are eating up the media BS. Beutler doesn't even frame it as media speculation, he appears to believe it.

7. VERY good. Pres Obama knows how important a strong public option is.
I believe him when he said he was going to spend his political capital on this issue.

8. Without the AFL-CIO Obama does not get re-elected
They spent $200 million on ads for Obama in 2008, without the AFL-CIO members voting for him or their ad push he will not get re-elected
