Kerry at town hall meeting: This is why the public option is so important. (updated)
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 09:35 PM by ProSense
This is from a live blogging of the Kerry town hall meeting:

Countering the attacks and a GOP plan

Why don't we point out all the things that public employees do?

JK - Baffled by the opposition.

What is the GOP plan?

Person on the floor - What is your premium?

JK - $12k/year

Person - Why can't we have that plan?

JK - That's what I proposed when I ran for President in 2004?

Another person - When you look at the 47 million uninsured, and take out illegal immigrants, people who choose not to get health insurance, people who are poor but don't take advantage of public assistance, there are relatively few uninsured.

Some boos - JK implores all to be polite and listen.

Person - Why not encourage people to buy from the private sector?

JK - That's part of the plan, similar to the health connector in Mass that puts together a menu of potential options. But if you merely help people buy insurance in the existing system, you're perpetuating the problem.

This is why the public option is so important. It will encourage the private sector to be more efficient and effective... Many systemic problems aren't addressed in the private system we have, so we need to fix those systemic problems... I just quoted you the costs... This is why we have to fix it.

Video: Sen. Kerry takes lead on health care reform

(NECN: John Moroney, Somerville, Mass.) - Senator Kennedy's devotion to health care is part of his legacy. A week after his death, the debate over reform goes on with the now senior Senator of Massachusetts leading the way.

Senator John Kerry hosted a town hall meeting in Somerville Wednesday night. Thousands of people showed up to take part. There were some vocal disagreements, but nothing like those seen at other such meetings.

It was Kerry's first public event since the death of Ted Kennedy. He says the loss of Kennedy is a huge loss in the push to reform the nation's health care system.

The deep divisions which have marked these town hall meetings across the country were evident outside of Somerville High School. Still a line of supporters seemed endless.

Updated to add, the place was packed:

4. Thank you. The whole BMG live thread is great, actually - but
I'm really glad he reiterated his support for the public option and even better - cited specific reasons and cost savings. Another interesting bit I read over there:

Next Qeustion - All the evidence presented sounds like we need a single payer system. Don't we? People will call you names and put a Hitler moustache on the President, but they'll do that anyway.

JK and Ted Kennedy talked about this often, Kennedy would say "There are 15 ways to do this, the important thing is to get it done."

There is a clash, between the current private sector and public sector benefits.

People have to be comfortable with what we do. Some of the anger comes from misunderstanding, some from fear and distrust of Washtington. People fear the government will make things work.

JK has talked about single payer in his committee and in the (Democratic?) caucus.

The challenge is to deliver a bill that makes things better.

6. Brief irony pause here
Sorry, couldn't help myself

Ah, John Kerry got started on the public stage by protesting the government and how it didn't work in the war policies in Vietnam. He did a number of very good investigations in the US Senate based on government not working and actively working to deceive. It is a little bit ironic to have him say: People fear the government will make things work.

Just an observation. Life really is full or ironies, isn't it.

5. They just don't get it
Some people cannot afford insurance.

The median income in this country makes $32,000 give or take. I make double that and feel like I am struggling to keep up with the system. If $32,000 is the median, $12,000 for insurance is 3/8 of your annual salary.

How are people supposed to put a roof over their head, food on the table, clothes on their back and pay for school? (Public school is not free).

I don't know how anyone at median income is making it todays America.

8. actually the median income is around $46,000 but your point remains valid.
I mean hell my personal income is around $140,000 and I still have trouble paying the rent and all my bills here in NYC.

What about deductibles, co-pays, medication and out-of-pocket expenses for things your insurance won't cover?

13. Sen Kerry is now covered by Medicare
He turned 65 last year. so all those things are paid by coverage added to Medicare, which is prime coverage for him now, as it is for all Americans over 65.

11. There are subsidies for all people up to 4 times the poverty level
in the HELP bill. Someone making $32,000 would qualify for a subsidized rate.

Mostly Friendly Crowd greets Kerry at Somerville town hall

By Travis Andersen, Town Correspondent

Senator John F. Kerry said at his Town Hall meeting on Wednesday night that millions of Americans would lose their jobs in the next five years - among other calamities - if Congress does nothing to change the nation's health care system.

He addressed a mostly friendly crowd of about 2,800 at Somerville High School. Spectators packed the auditorium and gymnasium to hear his pitch for national health care reform.

"We cannot continue to be the only developed country in the world that does not cover everybody," the Massachusetts Democrat said to enthusiastic applause in his opening remarks.

If the uninsured population continues to climb, Kerry said, the nation would spend $7 trillion on health care by 2025; Medicare, the federal health plan for seniors, would go broke by 2017; and the average cost of a family health plan would reach $24,000 by 2016.
