Why don't the Dems "prep" the crowds before these Town Hall "debates"?
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 08:36 AM by Christa
I wish this was my idea.

"Interestingly enough, the thought popped into my head last night over dinner - WHY don't the Dems "prep" the crowds before these Town Hall "debates"?? What I mean is, all the late night TV comedians (Jay, Dave, Connan, etc) have a "warm up" comedian who works the crowd for 30 mins or so before the show starts. They not only tell jokes, but the also inform the audience of news events and other pertinent things (in a humorous way, of course), so that when, say, David Letterman comes out and cracks a Sarah Palin joke, the audience reacts because they know the backstory! The warm up comedian made sure that he explained all about the back & forth that Demon Dave & Saintly Sarah have been having; the audience was IN on the joke!

Why aren't the Dems doing something like this when they're having these "open forums", where people show up sometimes 4 hours early in order to get good seats? Why don't they have a series of slides with questions & answers playing (a la the movie theaters), prepping people with little info-nuggets about the FACTS? Not just about health care either... they could pop in questions about lobbying by the AMA, show little video clips of people who have been denied coverage for serious illness while juxtaposing clips of the life of luxury the insurance chieftains enjoy, and most importantly, show - via Q&As and video montages - the MASSSIVE destruction of our government, our economy, our environment and our world image by Bush/Cheney and the Radical Right. REMIND people that the people who are AGAINST Health Care Reform are the very SAME people who cheered the complete de-regulation of the banking industry, AND THEY WANT THE SAME FOR HEALTH CARE!!

THEN, after everybody's had a chance to be De-FOXed, De-Limbaughed, De-Becked. De-Coultered, De-O'Reillyed, etc., THEN start the Town Hall Meeting."

1. Because the teabaggers would stage an attack on whoever was giving the presentation
and destroy the equipment.

Even if it was all set up to run without human intervention, a lot of equipment would be destroyed.

Either that, or they'd try to stand up in front of the screen while it was running and yell their nonsense about killing Grandma.

Oh, and don't forget, what's sauce for the goose...that would mean all Republicans would show presentations before all their town hall meetings to make sure the crowd was properly "Foxed Up" and "Hannitized" and "Dittoheaded" full of lies prior to the meeting.

2. They are not interested in facts - they have an agenda and it will not be stopped
They have been programmed to assume that any facts tossed around are left wing tricks. In a way, it actually riles them up more as it validates their innate fear that facts take advantage of their limited ability to think independently and use reason and logic.

3. The Dems want corporate friendly reform for corporate donations. If they gave people facts, it
would hurt their overall strategy.

Think about the misinformation on this board

You have to remember that the drug companies, the insurance companies and the AMA have all endorsed the current legislation. They appreciate that it currently has no strong public option. And they love the huge increases in revenues written in from mandatory individual mandates, mandates subsidized with tax dollars.

I doubt the Dems want the public to know that's what we are getting. basically it's Romney care.

4. 100% Agree with you Christa...
I never thought about it that way before but you are very much right..Doing something like this incl. the movie theatre style slides is very good. It owuld help dispell silly myths without the inevitable shouting match (scream at the screen all you want). It would certainly help keep those who were there to cause trouble with ill thought out facts to rethink that approach since they now realize the facts were put on screen for all to see and if they still dare to stand up and shout against it they risk looking like a fool in front of everyone else who also read the facts.

This is a very simple solution and sadly when widely known by democrats i think they still wouldnt adopt it. It's just their nature to be abused.

5. Thank you, quantass
I think it is a brilliant idea, and instead of knocking it down it should be explored. We really have to try EVERYTHING in our power to get the general public really know what the facts are, and this may be the route to go.

6. Some of it is just that they're politicans
And they never stop running for office - so it's all about the politican, not necessarily the issues.

BTW, Power Point is on a lot of computers with MS Office - and it's very easy to use for presentation slides. Or you could screen "Sicko"......

7. at campaign events, they have warm-up speakers
They'll usually have some local official, maybe someone at the state level, maybe even a national figure all speak, then have the main attraction come out.

I agree that maybe the warm-ups could field some questions, explain the main speaker's positions, and even bear the first volleys of rotten tomatoes and shout downs. I wouldn't go so far as attempted
"indoctrination" or anything though.

They could also explain the protocol for the meeting... although that may be useless with the teabagger types.
