Health care reform supporters take message to courthouse steps

300 similar events slated nationally, organizer says
By Brian M. Boyce
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — As congress readies for the ongoing battles in health care reform, local organizers are pressing for what has come to be known as the “public option.”

About 30 participants gathered on the Vigo County Courthouse steps Wednesday evening, signs held high, as horns honked up and down U.S. 41.

“We’re here supporting health care reform in general, with a strong emphasis on the public option,” explained organizer Michael Myers, local coordinator for political action group MoveOn.org.

According to Myers, 300 similar events were transpiring nationally, gathering about 25,000 in simultaneous vigil for those suffering from a lack of health care coverage.

Myers said the U.S. ranks 37 among industrialized nations with regard to successful outcomes in health care procedures, and he feels universal health care coverage would remedy that.
