Pelosi: Public Option Best Way to Control Costs, Promote Competition
First:

But liberal Democrats, who see a new government plan as central to reform, dislike the compromise. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at a news conference in San Francisco on Wednesday warned insurers that if Democrats go along with the idea it would trigger "a very robust public option."

Interesting.

Pelosi: Public Option Best Way to Control Costs, Promote Competition

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on health insurance reform legislation pending before Congress:

“Any real change requires the inclusion of a strong public option to promote competition and bring down costs. If a vigorous public option is not included, it would be a major victory for the health insurance industry.

“President Obama has said that a public option will keep the insurance companies honest. If someone has a better idea for promoting competition and reducing health care costs, they should put it on the table. But for the past month, opponents of health insurance reform have demonstrated that they are afraid of the facts. They have only offered distortions, distractions and misrepresentations to try to kill this historic legislation.

“A bill without a strong public option will not pass the House. Eliminating the public option would be a major victory for the insurance companies who have rationed care, increased premiums and denied coverage.”

2. If its going to be a trigger why not go for a strong Single Payer?!?
Why settle for Public Option when you can threaten using a trigger with a Single Payer alternative? I know this is the ultimate threat against the industry to shape up.

6. Totally agree
And that is the value in a "trigger" that many here aren't seeing. If a "trigger" is used as a compromise for a single-payer option, then that threat will "keep the insurers honest" much better than an active but weak, non-competing, fire-walled "public option".

9. I'm not seeing the value in trigger. It sounds like a bonanza.

Insurance co.given several years to shape up. They have to stop taking our money and they have to stop denying us access to certain medical treatments? They get to prove this over a lenthy period of several years and when they are proven to be the thugs they are then we can have real change?

10. The status quo is a bonanze
And the proposed anemic "public option", as has been scored, has no power to change that. A major threat that carried a big weight maybe could.

Who knows. Id rather do away with it all and see Medicare for All. Thats not going to happen. A real public option probably wont either (and it wont even start till 2013 at this rate). I just think a "trigger" could replace an active shitty public option with a potential threat of a public option that would devastate the private insurance industry.

On the otherhand, it depends on who is crafting the bill (IOW, could you really trust a trigger being pulled due to criteria being easy to meet?). If the current course gives you any indication, the trigger would be designed to never be pulled, and if so, it would deliver a meaningless option. Im not too hopeful either way really.

7. Anything is a threat to the status quo.
Dems are holding all the cards, but it's funny to see who suddenly wants to come out in support of a trigger.

Trigger for single payer = good, but trigger for public option = spineless, sellout Dems?

11. "Trigger for single payer = good, but trigger for public option = spineless"
Thats basically how I feel about it, yes.

If you are going to create trigger conditions for the public option laid out in HR 3200, don't waste everyone's time.

But if you are going to create trigger conditions for something that will devastate the private insurance industry, that JUST might make them play nice finally, and only be "benevolent" in their own self-interest to preserve their viability.

The triggered *threat*, well, has to really threaten the industry to be a useful mechanism whatsoever. If it does not, why bother with a trigger at all? If only as a "compromise" to pass something, in a Democratic controlled government, fine....but thats doesn't bode so well for the party

on the senate to negotitate a bill that will contain that option. It's all on the Senate and for right wing constituents to just reasonably listen to their prepresentative.
