Stephanopoulos: President Will Make Case For Public Option Wednesday Night (VIDEO)
President Will Make Case For Public Option Wednesday Night
September 06, 2009 9:17 AM

I had a pretty spirited go around with White House Press Secretary Roberts Gibbs and the latest on this dilemma over the public option. The bottom line: Gibbs says the President will make the case for a public option in his speech to Congress on Wednesday but he won't issue a veto threat if it isn't in the final package.

Gibbs also said the White House is willing to draft its own health care legislation. Here's our exchange:

GEORGE: There has been some talk about whether the President will draft legislation is that what’s happening now?

GIBBS: “Well look, We have been looking a legislation for months. You have now several different proposals in the House and Senate that have made the way to the committee process. Obviously the Senate Finance Committee continues to work, so you are going to have ideas coming from a couple different directions and the president has take all those stands and pull them together.”

GEORGE: So he will do that and put his ideas on the table?

GIBBS: Were going to certainly..People will leave that speech knowing where stands and if it takes whatever to get health care done the president is ready willing and able to do that. We are closer George than we have ever been before.”

1. Well gee, the media has been all over the board on this. I think I will wait and see what he says
myself, rather than believe a press which has not only become less reliable, but intentionally dishonest

2. Good...Just hope he doesnt say "with a Trigger"
I wish he would add the "will veto if no public option" because it will show strength and quiet the nay sayers. But if he is willing to say it without a trigger than that is fine. Still holding my breath

4. I think threatening to veto would turn the whole thing into a complete disaster.

and can not be asked to resign for doing so. My votes for her were well spent.

8. I'm waiting for the part that says he'll make the case for P.O., as your subject line says.
It's not in your post. Don't tell me we have to link to the whole thing and read through it to find some indication of truth that's in the caption? Say it ain't so.

12. Nope. Not gonna watch the video. You put a subject line because it's
the main thing...so when you quote from the article/interview, you INCLUDE that most important thing that you felt the need to put in the subject line.

I'm not gonna go huntin' for it. It must not be a big deal, if it wasn't quoted.

14. Oh get a fucking grip.
I'm the one who posted the subject line so i'll assume this was meant to be a response to me.

The subject line is a direct copy-paste from Steph's own story. I attributed it to him in the subject line. The first sentence out of his mouth in the video (also identified in the subject line) is regarding the public option. I copied and pasted in the text of Steph's own story and can't control what he says.

If your too lazy or stubborn or clueless to find out what's going on, fine. But don't blame others for your own personal deficiencies.

Learn how to read. You are making yourself look really childish and petty.

11. Axelrod too -
From Politico -

"In no way did I back off our position,” he wrote. “I must have said half a dozen times that he thinks the public option is an important tool to bring about competition and choice that will help consumers. To say that it is not the whole of health insurance reform, in a country where 160 million people have employer-sponsored health insurance and would not even be affected by this, does not mean I am backing off!”

Indeed, Axelrod also told Gregory: “He said there must be an exchange where people can get insurance at a competitive price. He believes in competition and choice. The public option is an important tool to help provoke that where there is no competition. He still believes that. ... So we want to create a pool in which people who don't have insurance, and small businesses, can go and get insurance at a competitive price. And a public option would be a valuable tool within that group, that package of plans that would be offered, private and public.”

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs made similar remarks on ABC’s “This Week.”

Host George Stephanopoulos, summing up a long exchange, said to Gibbs: “The president, from what I can hear, is going to make the case for the public health-insurance option — for a form of the public health-insurance option — on Wednesday, but he is not going to say: ‘If you don’t bring me one, I veto the bill.’”
