Obama to defend public health care option: White House

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama this week will defend his deeply controversial bid to push a public health care option, which would be offered alongside existing private insurance plans, the White House said Sunday.

Obama, whose plans to remake health care have been squeezed during a summer marked by volatile town hall meetings in which conservatives railed against changing the system, will address a rare joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday and try to breath new life into his reform effort.

Congress and American television viewers after the address will know "exactly where the president stands, exactly what he thinks we have to do to get health care reform this year. And he intends to do it," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told ABC's "This Week" program.

"The president strongly believes that we have to have (a public) option like this to provide choice and competition, to provide a check on insurance companies," Gibbs added.

4. "Defend"? But will he passionately argue for it? Or threaten to veto a bill without it?
Or attack anyone who opposes it? Or launch strategic nuclear strikes on the rumored locations of those "centrists" who haven't publicly supported it?

NOT ENOUGH, I SAY! NOT NEARLY ENOUGH!

5. I am surprised so many of you dont realize its not a matter of the Public Option being included but
if it requires a "trigger" to make it happen. It is obvious to anyone paying attention that the Public Option will be something Obama requests (but doesnt demand) in his speech on Wednesda...they real scary thought is whether he mentions the use of a trigger. My guess he wont bring it up but he wont admonish against having it either which is disappointing because the bill out of the senate is likely to include one.

Please pay attention people. It has been obvious for some time the PO will be in his speech. It is meaningless if it has to be triggered.

7. It'll take a trigger to pass the Senate - at least the first time.

8. Yep. Public option in the House bill, public option with trigger in the Senate...
...and God only knows what in the final bill.

9. I don't agree with that.
There are a lot of variables, and people are simply assuming the trigger enjoys broader support in the Senate. It's possible that it does not.

For crying out loud! I cant wait! lol

According to Richard Wolffe, the President is an infamous procrastinator (when it comes to speeches.) Probably one reason why we dont know what's in the speech is that it may not be finished yet!

12. That's probably what he will say on Wednesday
that he "strongly supports" a public option to provide choice and competition. But he will leave it to Congress to come up with the bill.

If my boss says he strongly supports my getting a pay raise, does he mean (1) I'm getting a pay raise or (2) he likes the idea of a pay raise but I'm not getting one. I think it's the latter. If he really wanted to give me a pay raise, he'd just do it.
