It's Good Strategy For Obama To NOT Draw A Line On The PO Tonight
I don't expect him to nor do I think it's a particularly good idea. I expect he will make a forceful case for it, but he should leave the line drawing to others, like the progressive and black caucuses. This is the smart move IMO. When it's included they will be more empowered than they've been in a long time.

2. Thank you. I was starting to think I'm the only person here who believes that and won't give up on
Obama if he doesn't.

14. you must mean there will be in the House version
before they meet with the Senate to combine their 2 bills. I agree the House version will have the public option in some form. But I don't see the Senate having it in their version. Reconciling those 2 versions will be the real battle. And I have no idea how that will turn out. We just don't have the votes in the Senate. Two many Dems are DINOs.

15. No I mean the final version, after conference
if it takes 50 votes plus Biden to pass reform with a public option then that is what we will have.

5. Obama will try to get the Progressive and Black Caucuses to accept a compromise
short of a robust public option.

If we want to support them, we can't do it without acknowledging that that means opposing Obama. The progressive representatives will fold if the progressive voters don't have the will to oppose Obama.

10. This speech is going to draw a line in the sand on many aspects of the bill.
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 05:40 PM by ProSense
Anything Obama says must be in the bill is drawing a line. Why this is being linked to the public option is beyond me. If he says he will not accept the status quo, a bill with taxes on the middle class or any other measure, that's drawing a line in the sand. If he's going to be drawing lines in the sand on other issues, why not the public option?

I've said it before. I work in sales and some of us here would make terrble salesmen. if you are trying to bring someone around to your side you don't start demanding stuff. the person you are trying to convince will balk.

it didn't work for Clinton did it?

Staying in Iraq and Afghanistan forever are good ideas, too. So is giving trillions of dollars to Wall Street, with no strings attached. Let the powerless argue about principles and ideologies.

18. You're right. Obama doesn't have to issue a veto threat.
The Progressive and Black caucuses in the House already have drawn the line in the sand - that will work just fine.
