Bill Maher: "New Rule: Democrats must get in touch with their inner asshole"
New Rule: Democrats must get in touch with their inner asshole. And no, I'm not being gratuitously crude when I say that. I refer to the case of Van Jones, and I'm sure you know who Van Jones is. At least I hope you do, because I haven't a clue, or at least I didn't until this week, when I found out he was the man the Obama administration hired to find jobs for Americans in the new green industries. Seems like a smart thing to do in a recession, but Van Jones got fired because he became the Scary Negro of the Week on Fox News, where, let's be honest, they still feel threatened by Harry Belafonte.

Now, I know that right now, I'm supposed to be all re-injected with yes-we-can fever after the big health care speech, and it was a great speech -- when Black Elvis gets jiggy with his teleprompter, there is none better. But here's the thing: Muhammad Ali also had a way with words, but it helped enormously that he could also punch guys in the face.

What got Van Jones fired was they caught him on tape saying that Republicans are assholes. And they call it "news." And Obama didn't say a word in defense of Jones and basically fired him when Glenn Beck told him to. Just like we dropped "end of life counseling" from health care reform because Sarah Palin said it meant "death panels" on her Facebook page.

Crazy evil morons make up things for Obama to do, and he does it.

Same thing with the speech to children this week. If you missed it, the president attempted to merely tell school children to work hard and wash their hands, and Cracker Nation reacted as if he was trying to hire the Black Panthers to hand out grenades in homeroom. Of course, the White House immediately capitulated. "No students will be forced to view the speech," a White House spokesperson assured a panicked nation. Isn't that like admitting that the president might be doing something unseemly? What a bunch of cowards. If the White House had any balls, they'd say, "He's giving a speech on the importance of staying in school, and if you spineless jackasses don't show it to every damn kid in your school we're cutting off your federal education funding tomorrow."

The Democrats just never learn: Americans don't really care which side of an issue you're on as long as you don't act like pussies. When Van Jones called the Republicans assholes, he was paying them a compliment. He was talking about how they can get things done even when they're in the minority, as opposed to the Democrats, who can't seem to get anything done even when they control both houses of Congress, the presidency, and Bruce Springsteen.

1. No, Democrats must NOT get in touch with their inner-asshole.
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 10:05 PM by Writer
We saw an example of an "inner-asshole" on Wed. night, and it was not pretty.

Assholery does not make for good politics. It's only good enough for rhetorical shit-flinging.

BTW: Bill, we all know you're well in touch with your own inner-asshole. One of these days you'll actually like something other than marijuana and loose women.

2. "they will make news. Because people who take to the streets always do."
Yeah right.

Like people protesting wars get so much coverage.

3. I agree. I don't want rudeness, if it can be avoided. But I expect leaders to act like leaders.
If someone is twisting the truth, being disrespectful, standing in the way of legislation, not letting school children see a Presidential speech, I expect the ones in authority to step up to the podium and speak loudly and strongly, and if necessary, harshly about it.

The people have to have confidence in their leaders that they can take the bull by the horn and handle things. I appreciate finessing a situation. That's the preferred way. But when you're dealing with insane "morans," that doesn't always work.

How to handle the Blue Dogs. You didn't see the Republican Party going to the "mavericks" in their party to see what they'd take in return for voting for a Republican bill. They were blackmailed, threatened, cajoled, and even paid, behind the scenes. The mavericks were brought in line, and the Republican agenda was passed repeatedly, even tho some in their party disagreed with it. The Republicans know how to get their members to fall in line, which is necessary to accomplish a goal. When misinformation (or unfavorable information) hits the media, the GOP sends out their dogs to blanket all the networks with the GOP talking points. They get their message out, and they use key terms repeatedly to make strong points. They don't pussyfoot around.

But the Dems have always been more mavericky, I guess. It's in their nature. I think the Republicans may take back Congress next year, because of it, though. I hope not. But I fear that is what will happen.

5. Acting like that hasn't won the GOP any points
Every time one of them says something stupid, it lowers their approval even further. All the Democrats need to do is be more firm.

helped enormously that he could also punch guys in the face." - and the point of that (and no, not to punch Wilson in the face) but to tell the idiots whining about his giving a speech to school kids, as the PRESIDENT, to stay in school should have been watched by all kids, and if they didn't like it - well they could give up all funds they've received! It was a non-political speech!

THAT'S WHAT HE MEANS BY 'PUNCHING'!!!

7. New rule: Americans must get in touch with their inner desire not to be assholes
Then again, a lot of them might not have that desire...

10. It was funny but I'd favor assertiveness than a-hole, we don't need another asshole.

There's a wide selection to choose from in Congress already. President Obama offers something different from that we can be heated but not disagreeable in doing so. There was one youtube clip that said our president defines everything who we are, there seems a lot to that we're just trawling through the overspill of the last 8 years.

11. Democrats need to get ahold of their inner (and outer) nuts, if you ask me.
And just focus on the jobs that have to be done. The hate mongers are security risks that are getting in the way of progress.

There is a difference between exercising freedom of speech and misinformation with the intent to create chaos and violence. It has to be nipped in the bud now.

14. Oh please. Van Jones got canned because he signed a truther petition, not for saying "assholes"
The last thing we need to do is to sink to the name-calling level. We're smarter than that.

that repubs were a-holes.
