CBS News Poll Shows More Americans Support a Government-Sponsored Health Care Option After the President's Speech to Congress

President Obama made some progress explaining his health care reform proposals to Americans with his speech Wednesday night, a new CBS News poll shows, winning more support for a so-called public option. Still, Americans are mostly doubtful health care coverage can be expanded to more Americans without increasing the deficit.

After Mr. Obama’s Congressional address on health care reform, CBS re-interviewed 648 adults who were first interviewed in a CBS News Poll conducted August 27-31. Fifty-three percent of them say they tuned in to watch the speech.

Among those who watched, 60 percent say they mostly agree with the health care plans the president presented; 33 percent mostly disagree.

8. That's about the long and short of it...

Republicans can (and do) pass profoundly unpopular policies- while the hapless (or corrupted) Dems can't get things through that upwards of 3/4's of Americans support!

Not exactly a prescription for a successful nation.

6. While some were disappointed in his speech
...I saw the strategy of President Obama rightfully placing the PO as a centrist position that is supported by a majority of voters. Now awaiting today's Presidential town hall, I expect that the poll numbers will climb higher in favor of the PO. This is what he will use as a club over the heads of the conservadems.

7. Exactly. Paint the PO as centrist, and you can more easily move it to the left.
Which I think is ultimately part of the plan. A bill hasn't even been written yet, but by the time it has been, I have a feeling that many of the naysayers here will be a little less miserable.
