Where the hell is NAACP ???
Edited on Sun Sep-13-09 11:46 PM by Hutzpa
Do they have constitutional Lawyers anymore(?) if so, what happened to them??

Have they become so awash with cash that they don't give a hoot to racist
comments and commentators?

Why the silence????

Just wondering.....

2. What did someone say that is unconstitutional, and if it was
why would pursuit of that be confined to NAACP lawyers?

but the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc, commonly known as the 'Inc' fund, has done a huge amount of work on such matters, as you can tell by glancing at this:

9. In the past they had to point it out to make people aware now it's pretty overt...
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 01:41 AM by GivePeaceAchance
The next question what are the good folks that oppose it going to do now they can see it for themselves. The NAACP would make themselve targets if they got involved in this now, it can only change with individual conversations one to one.

10. Point of info: the NAACP is not the same as the NAACP Legal Defense Fund
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 07:03 AM by HamdenRice
I think it was back in the 60s that laws were passed preventing any organization from being both a lobbying organization (NAACP) and public interest litigation organization (NAACP LDF).

So the NAACP, which had done both, split into two different organizations. The "lawyers" are with the LDF. They sue companies, municipalities and other government branches for discrimination. They don't get involved in protesting stupid racist private actions, such as teabaggers.

The NAACP might get involved, but I think that would be playing into the hands of the wing nuts, because Obama does not want to be seen as a "Black President" but as "the President" of all Americans.

11. So the NAACP shouldn't protest against racists and racism?
"The NAACP might get involved, but I think that would be playing into the hands of the wing nuts, because Obama does not want to be seen as a "Black President" but as "the President" of all Americans."

But isn't he also the President of African-Americans and other minorities?

Using your logic, SNCC, SCLC, Dr. Martin Luther King and the NAACP should not have organized civil rights demonstrations and anti-racist activities back in the 60's because that would have played into hands of segregationists and right-wing racist groups.

13. The OP asked about NAACP lawyers
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 09:20 AM by HamdenRice
The NAACP lawyers are NAACP LDF lawyers. They litigate civil rights cases and generally don't get involved in short term political controversies.

14. No one is asking them to get into
politics, my argument is -- if you can call it that -- to get NAACP to protest the sudden
outburst of racism that has escalated recently, if nothing is done this may continue and
the end result will not look good.

Straightens up those racists right quick. Works every time!

25. I am not saying that
c'mon, NAACP is there to counter all these hate that has been going on lately and
it is not about the President alone, this is about ordinary folks who are beginning
to feel the brunt of this misplaced rage.

Take a look at this story on dailykos;

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/9/14/781824/-Upate:-Thanx.-I-am-scared-for-my-black-husband-

you can display your frustration on what I don't know but the fact is, I would like to see an
organization as NAACP start making statements on this outburst of racism.

26. See #5 - They've already made statements.
Your original premise eluded to legal action, which is not the same as "making statements."

And so far, as has already been mentioned here several times, no laws have been broken.

17. Thanks for the history, HamdenR. More:
The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (NAACP LDF, the Inc. Fund, or simply LDF) is a leading United States civil rights organization based in New York City. The organization began as the legal wing of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) under the leadership of Charles Hamilton Houston. In 1938, Thurgood Marshall, Houston's student and future Supreme Court justice, succeeded him as NAACP counsel. Marshall further developed the strategies and goals of the legal department. In 1957 he established LDF as an organization totally independent of the NAACP.<1>

Theodore M. Shaw was the 5th director-counsel and president of LDF.<2> John Payton recently succeeded Mr. Shaw as LDF's 6th director-counsel and president. <3>

Probably the most famous case in the history of LDF was Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case in 1954 in which the United States Supreme Court explicitly outlawed de jure racial segregation of public education facilities. During the civil rights protests of the 1960s, LDF represented and provided counsel for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., among others.<2>
