20. OK...
...how about the other 300 million of us that would be abused and confined due to Martial law? Martial Law would bring far more problems than it would solve (Personally, I do not think that it would solve anything).

I sort of understand your fear, but I think that you are over reacting.

34. Did someone say MARITAL LAW?
I've got yer marital law right here, bub. It's actually pretty clever, if you ask me. :)

Proposition 8 tried to make traditional marriage safer by making sure that Adam Lambert and Ryan Seacrest can’t profess their eternal love to one another. Prop 8 backers recognized that gay marriage was just the beginning of a very slippery slope. Next people would be marrying goats, trees and particularly stylish armchairs.

But Prop 8 only attacked the problem from the edges. I’m going after the heart of the matter. That’s why I drafted the 2010 California Protection of Marriage Act to ban divorce in the state of California. If you can’t get divorced, you can’t destroy traditional marriage.

Previous generations had it right. It’s better to stay together in a soul-sucking sham of a marriage, filled with icy silence punctuated with passive-aggressive hostilities than to admit you might have made a mistake.

24. I'm thinking no.
Change always engenders fierce opposition. In one degree or another.

Consider that for some time now the far-right hate-hosts have been all over the public airwaves and we still captured both chambers of the Congress and the White House.

The president can help create a climate via dialogue and smart politics that can circumvent the impact the crazies have. The march on Sept. 12th has already fizzled into thin air. Michael Savage's services are no longer needed by KNEW radio.

We can always sharpen our game and play the populist card when and where needed.

A strong local Democratic party in a red state is the most under-rated strategy there is.

28. Do you know what martial law is? Are you suggesting this on a national basis?
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 10:13 AM by DeschutesRiver
In the simplest sense, martial law means that for an unspecified duration, the military takes control. Since the racism we are seeing is not limited to a certain geographic area, that would mean we would ALL be under military rule for a temporary period. This is usually reserved for times when civil authority has broken down completely, or if there was a war on our soil.

Not for thought crimes in a free society, where even the most vile ideas can be expressed and debated and railed against. I don't see that civil authority has broken down at all. Declaring martial law before the fact is called a military dictatorship. I am just not into that.

I am as unsettled as you about the current state of affairs, but all of this anti-government, racist sentiment isn't something new. It was there under the surface for quite some time now. The racism was far worse during the 60s, when actual black people were actually being lynched, and for a long time, no one did a thing about it. Black citizens were treated like cattle, segregated from using a white person's water faucet, toilet seat, dining area, hotel bed, same entrance door, man, the list was unbelievable. I was born into that world, and it shocked me even as a kid - I asked why, and got no answers. That time would have been a great one to declare martial law, say in the South, but since the evil was institutionalized, the evil was permitted to exist.

We aren't there, nor is it my belief that we will get even close to that again. Oh, there may well be deaths and tragedies, but however it progresses, the USA is not going back to that era, and the freaks who think that is going to happen can just keep spinning around in frustration. Because of the makeup of the US population at this point in time, the racists are in extreme danger of what they fear, ie, extinction. Back in their heyday, the system was set up to help maintain racism, with a majority of white able to dictate the terms of enslavement to the minority of blacks.

Today? They will only get so far, and they will be stopped. And it won't take martial law by the military to do that. It will take serious effort, unpleasant acts, and constant vigilance on the part of the rest of us to prevail. If we can't do that, we don't deserve to prevail.

ETA: if you are talking about localized instances of martial law, I agree it may happen at some point in the future, depending on how complete a breakdown of society occurs. But we aren't close yet, imho.

29. Sorry, but I have to disagree w/you here...
martial law is a last ditch efforet to maintain a semblence of order, we are far from having to declare anything like that.

There is no insurrection on the horizon...we should be trying to reign in things like the "Patriot Act", not calling for further intrusion on Liberty.
