"Compassion is voluntary, not compulsory."

"Compassion is not religious business, it is human business, it is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability, it is essential for human survival."
Dalai Lama

5. As human beings, we certainly *CAN* choose not to be compassionate.
Though, if you do it sort of proves that you're an asshole.

And where were all these people whining about govt spending when W was draining the US Treasury & maxing out the credit limit on our First National Bank Of China charge card?

6. I think you're either born with the compassion chromosome or you're not.
They can't understand us and we sure as hell cannot understand them. And you can't squeeze blood from a turnip.

9. "Compassion is voluntary" ...
unfortunately true and volunteers are in short supply if not non-existant amongst them. :-(

10. "Compassion is voluntary ..." doesn't go with the
"Love thy neighbor" thingie that Jesus taught.

But these people don't seem to "get" that while they proudly parade their skewed version of "Christianity."

compassion for the planet we create a solution for climate change (or Hartmann's term atmospheric deterioration). With enough compassion on all sides there is resolution to conflict and limits to our consumer consumption, in just giving away what we don't use. Although the catch 22 too little consupmtion gives a bad economy, but still worthwhile to give stuff to them that need it.

12. Yes,
but more sign up for "lack of compassion". Which is the essential why for government programs.

Compassion was voluntary when the elderly were losing their homes and starving in the streets. Thus Social Security was invented.

Compassion was voluntary when the elderly, poor, and infirm were being driven to bankruptcy by medical costs. Thus Medicare was invented.

These things were not imposed on us by space aliens. They were invented by the American people to solve real world problems that "voluntary" compassion left behind to be dealt with.

If the much vaunted "private sector" and "voluntary compassion", both of which exist freely today, had solved the problem of limited access to healthcare, no reform would be needed and the discussion would not even be happening.
