Do you back ACORN?
I have not renewed my donation ( lazy) and cannot post a poll (cheapskate). Do you think we need to distance ourselves from ACORN and "let them go"? Have they become an Albatross to us? Do we really need this negative press?

I like to hear your thoughts on this subject..Facebook war plus family.

I personally feel it is time to close the book on our support of them. It seems corruption has infiltrated the organization.

1. The fact that we are seeing this much discussion on it means that Fox News' tactics have worked.
Not only did we see no real accountability for election fraud, but the "vote fraud" deflection tactics have taken on a whole new life.

2. Actually heard Jon Stewart
And it got me thinking about the Media not even touching the story. I am with Jon on this one...I don't even think the election has anything to do with the story other than the organization, which seems to be clearly out of control. At least in their hiring practices?

15. The organization does need to do some tightening up of the
people who get hired--front office people who publicly represent ACORN.

3. This is a witch hunt
the Republicans have been after them since they found out that this organization registered
1 plus million voters for the election.

It is unfortunate that they had to stack some of the offices with 30 watts bulb.

I heard on the radio about some bill to dismantle the organization and seven democrats
voted against it.

Have to wait and see...

4. Do I back ACORN?
As compared to what, oppose them?

I'm not going to let a couple volunteers who acted like boobs color my opinion of the organization, if that's what you're asking

5. Yes, we should back them,
if for no other reason than because we can't allow these ridiculous smear campaigns to succeed.

Corruption has infiltrated the organization? You think that people who support pimps and underage prostitutes have infiltrated ACORN? In what way does that make any sense?

Let's think about this for a minute. Some "corrupt" people decide to work for ACORN so that, in the off chance criminals come into their office for advice, they can give it to them. Wow! These people are freaking geniuses, I mean - who other than Doctor Evil himself would come up with such a dastardly plan? They'll make millions giving free advice to criminals. That plan is even better than having Mickey Mouse try to vote!

I don't think it's ACORN that's been infiltrated, DU perhaps, but not ACORN.

9. I asked a fair question
Yes, the 30 watt bulbs working in these offices are not the best reps for business...but this is ridiculous, how stupid can you be to subject yourself to comprising a way to bypass the law. I saw the videos from Jon show and I was shocked.

Jerry Springer-like but this should not be happening at a community organization imo.

Silly and stupid? No, they were trying to help these two jackasses subvert the law. ACORN is now creating a history of stupidity and piss poor hiring practices.

12. You didn't just ask a question. You stated that corruption has infiltrated the organization.
I don't see any evidence of that. Corruption exists to profit the corrupters in some way, not simply to dispense free advice to criminals.

We should not give up support of an organization like ACORN simply because a few people (silly, stupid, evil, whatever) in a few offices fell for something that was part of a deliberate smear campaign.

We cannot allow these types of smear campaigns to work. If we do, that just encourages it.

The employees are not necessarily bad apples. At least one of them has been shown to be an ACORN employee punking the actors. See my post #14 in this thread.

7. ACORN is not the problem; the racist Reich is
The Reich takes isolated incidents and uses them to make ACORN out to be the bogey man....the SCARY BLACK BOGEY MAN!

ACORN is singled out not because it is corrupt but because it reaches out to black folks and that scares the hell out of the Reich.

Fuck the Reich! Caving into them is no different than caving into the KKK.

24. You are exactly correct.
The GOP mounted a misinformation campaign against ACORN long ago.

Then the M$M picked up on it because, as we know, the GOP always has reliable information. :sarcasm:

Hey, if the GOP doesn't like ACORN I suggest we all donate to ACORN. The GOP has been pushing anti-ACORN misinformation for a long time.

8. I was willing to give them a break on the voter registration thing.
With an org. that large, you're going to have some idiots scam the registrations they turn in just to make their required # to get paid. I would have been willing to cut them a break if they only found ONE nutball giving out this insane tax advice, but finding as many as they did...sorry...I say cut em loose.

You should respect their civic responsibility and professionalism. But giving them a break? Wow, that's just nice.

10. ACORN needs to clean up its act.
They got caught telling people how to evade the law. That's dumb--not to mention illegal. Yes there is a witch hunt and frankly I don't understand the obsesson, but if you know they're out to get you--well you gotta be careful. Most people, except for those on the far right for whom the word ACORN, produces genuine foaming at the mouth, weren't too upset over the voter fraud allegations. This thing touches far more close to home--and they got 'em on candid camera.

Admit there is a problem. Impose training for employees and volunteers. Do your own audits. Sack anyone who doesn't get on board with the new way of doing things.

If they don't clean up their acts, they're just an albatross around the collective necks of all progressives.

13. I saw a couple of those videos, and my question is: What is ACORN's role...
are they charged with helping aspiring APPLICANTS
to APPLY for loans, mortgages, etc.?

Or are they the SOURCE of the financial aid?

This makes a big difference. If they are supposed
to be helping people to FILE, then they really didn't
do anything WRONG, much like a public defender has
a DUTY to defend even the lousiest of clients.

If they are actually determining WHO gets funds, however,
then they should have MUCH more oversight.

Personally, I don't think these ladies really believed
or CARED what those jokers were throwing down, they were
only interested in helping them to fit the forms to their
information.

The latest thing that Beck and others are hyperventilating over is another one of these tapes where an ACORN employee confesses to killing her husband. A police investigation shows that both of her ex husbands are alive and well.

She has stated that the people were obvious bad actors who were trying to shock her so she went along with the joke and tried to shock them right back.

Isn't it possible that others reacted in a similar way?

20. I'm highly suspicious
of the whole thing. While we try to get health care for everyone, it is typical of the RW that they would try these sleazy tactics.

A few bad apples do no spoil an entire organization. And even these bad apples are suspect. No tinfoil hat is needed - this is what right wing nuts do. I am inclined to think the entire thing is a set up until proven otherwise. Oh yea, and innocent until proven guilty.

22. Acorn has done such a poor job in training and supervising its
employees that I don't trust the results of their voter registration efforts in my own community or elsewhere. Because Acorn has been so unreliable, other organizations have really stepped up their registration efforts. This is especially true of the unions in my area. My/our answer has been to increase our contributions to DRIVE, the Teamster political action fund and to volunteer to register voters at the Labor Council booths at sporting events in the area.

Yes, it's a bad story for ACORN, for Obama, and for Democrats. But we let all the facts come out. We assess the real reach of the problem, and we let ACORN take corrective action.

Yes, ACORN is wounded, and they're going to have to stream line and re organize. But they are a valuable asset to our side, and will remain so.

30. How many ACORN branches did they filter through to find the bad one?
Didn't one in philadelphia throw them out and then call the police?

I'm not justifying child molestation. However, take a company with 10,000+ people and there are going to be some rapists, child molesters, sociopaths, etc. there. That doesn't justify it, but it is more a statement of the character of the individual than the institution.

If the leadership attempts to weed out corruption and abuse, then I will still support them. If they try to cover it up I will not.

33. When it comes to voter fraud - they're mere amateurs
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 06:34 PM by GCP
You've got to do it right - get the Secretary of State of a swing state to deny sufficient voting machines to the most populous counties and disenfranchise a huge number of people, while at the same time send excess voting machines out to the boondocks where all the religious fundamentalists live. Then refuse to extend the voting hours because people had been standing out in the rain for hours trying to vote (in said populous - read lower income - neighborhoods).

Now THAT'S voter fraud.
