Cubans in Miami?

Obama extends trade ban against Cuba

-snip-

"The president has determined that it is in the national interest of the United States to continue for one year the exercise of certain authorities under the Trading With the Enemy Act with respect to Cuba," the White House said on Monday.

-snip-

As Obama is the 11th consecutive US president to maintain the economic sanctions, his signing of the extension is viewed as a missed opportunity to signal a further willingness to ease relations between the two states.

This is while many condemn the sanctions for unnecessary hardships it has inflicted on ordinary Cubans for decades.

Amnesty International has urged Obama not to sign the extension, arguing that it deprives the Cuban people of access to vital medicine.

Havana claims the embargo -- originally intended to pressure Cuba into political changes -- has inflicted a loss of 93 billion USD on the Latin American nation.

But the US president has renewd the trade ban under the pretext of Havana's political prisoners and human rights issues.

19. Well, I hear they have weapons of mass destruction that they are unable to use while
the embargo remains in place. Does that about sum up your completely moronic and unfounded "fear"?

6. We support a ban on Cuba because you can't be president w/o Florida's Votes.
Somewhat the same reason why we are so supportive of Israel too.

14. Obama lifted the ban on Cuban exiles in the USA. We're banned. They're not.
Exiles support being granted their own full constitutional rights, and Mr Obama placated them.

Cuban exiles have been elevated to 1st class citizen/resident status, while the rest of America's citizens and residents of non-Cuban descent have been relegated to travel banned 2nd class citizens/residents.

The embargo on Cuba is about one thing. US political campaign contributions from both sides of the issue.

No embargo = no pro keeping the embargo contributions.

No embargo = no anti embargo campaign contributions.

Why on earth would American politicians remove a fundraising plank if the system requires that they seek funds from whatever sources they can drum up?

Status quo (read: money) rules the last 5 decades.

Until US campaign financing becomes nationalized, little will change.

10. embargo
If the government can immediately forgive Prescott Bush of dealing with the enemy, why can´t it forgive Cuba after 40 years?
