State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex officially kicked off his campaign for governor today at the North Charleston Convention Center.
Rex said on his Web site, if elected, he intends to take South Carolina in a new direction.
“I am running because South Carolina needs a Turnaround Governor," he said. "My turnaround mission will be to create jobs and a growing economy, a government committed to accountability and living within its means, a state committed to improving schools, and leadership that accurately reflects our values. For too long, our government has been distracted and defined by narrow special interests, and it’s time to put our people first."
Rex, 67, is former dean of education at Winthrop University. He served as president of Columbia College and vice president for university advancement at the University of South Carolina. He was the only Democrat to win statewide office in the 2006 general election in South Carolina, defeating Republican Karen Floyd by a narrow margin.
Rex joins several others in the Democratic bid for governor: Columbia attorney and veteran party activist Dwight Drake, Charleston attorney Mullins McLeod and state senators Vincent Sheheen and Robert Ford.
