Democrats have a 13 to 10 majority on the Finance Committee
MSNBC:

Democrat have a three-vote advantage in committee: 13 to 10. If all the Republicans vote against the final bill, then Democrats can only afford to have one Democrat vote against the bill and have it still pass. If Olympia Snowe (R) votes for the bill, they can afford to lose two Dems... and so on.

The media is determined to make Snowe the focus, implying that the Dems will cave to accommodate her.

Why would they want to lose two Dems to get Snowe's vote? It's clear that there are Democrats on the committee who strongly oppose a trigger, and on that score Snowe is standing firm.

TPM:

Rockefeller says that Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) is under intense pressure from within her party to defect, but, as we've been noticing, she seems to be holding firm...at least for now.

Snowe is under a lot of pressure, coming from a state in which support for a public option is high: 58%

1. Democrats have lots of majorities, none of which seem to be doing us much good
...as far as getting progressive legislation passed/established, though I suppose the "definitive" read on that is coming this fall...

2. That "majority" is in name only
Because most of the fucking idiots on that list are "Democrats" in name only. Shit, with the exception of Kerry, it might as well be the "This Is What's Wrong With The Current Democratic Party" committee. And even he did far too much DLC pandering the first half of this decade.

4. Is Snowe determined to follow in Lincoln Chafee's footsteps?
She already acknowledges that the Republican party has left her, just as Chafee has. Will we have to find a Sheldon Whitehouse in Maine (Whitehouse is the Democrat who defeated Chafee for his Senate seat.) to get her to see the light?

Maybe all that intense pressure on Snowe will get her to take a break to have a coffee with Arlen.

5. Rockefeller already said that he won't support the Baucus bill (thank God)
So one more Dem and it's over.
