The Last Time Right-Wing Hatred Ran Wild Like This a President Was killed
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 08:23 AM by Christa
That being John F. Kennedy, who was gunned down in Dallas, of course.

I've been thinking a lot of Kennedy and Dallas as I've watched the increasingly violent rhetorical attacks on Obama be unfurled. As Americans yank their kids of class in order to save them from being exposed to the President of the United States who only wanted to urge them to excel in the classroom. And as unvarnished hate and name-calling passed for health care 'debate' this summer.

The radical right, aided by a GOP Noise Machine that positively dwarfs what existed in 1963, has turned demonizing Obama--making him into a vile object of disgust--into a crusade. It's a demented national jihad, the likes of which this country has not seen in modern times.

1. I guess the author of that piece doesn't think the RW hatred
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 08:31 AM by jonnyblitz
went wild during the CLinton era if he claims the last time was during JFK. I thought the hatred during the Clinton era was pretty damn INTENSE myself. OKC bombing for example...

20. "ran wild LIKE THIS" was the statement and I agree. Please give me some examples of
reich-wingers bringing guns to town hall meetings, using mob rule to disrupt proceedings that are intended as public forums, and claiming that the President is an agent of a foreign nation.

The current level of right-wing hatred and public demonstration against a President has NEVER happened during my adult life of over 40 years.

The bombing of the Murrah building was indeed a terrorist act, but it was not carried out in an environment of massive media coverage of Americans who question if the President is even a citizen of the U.S.

2. More recent than that. 1995, when Israeli Labour PM Rabin was gunned down by a
militant Rightist. Their's are as crazy as ours. More.

4. There's a segment of the population who won't be satisfied until he's dead
After a few glasses of wine last night, I told my husband that I think Obama's days are numbered. I know that's a horrendous thing to even think, never mind say, but there's so much sheer hatred and insanity going around. Couple that with one or two secret service guys who might be in on a plot, (think Robert Kennedy), and nasty things have a habit of coming true in this country.

I really, really hope I'm wrong.

11. I think it's a miracle that no one has tried to kill him so far
We either have a fabulous Secret Service or the story has been suppressed.

16. I read the other day that threats against Obama have risen 400 times
over threats to the last few presidents. This in just 8 months.

24. We will never know
just how many have been stopped. When the Secret Service does their investigations just by showing up to ask questions they can be can be stopping an incipient attempt. If a person or persons think they are being watched they might stop.

12. My son is reading a book about that
He just told me the other day that he is reading all about the radicals who hated Lincoln and how their hatred inspired Booth to kill Lincoln.

Wish I could remember the name of the book. Sorry.

of booth. It read like a mystery but was written from historical documents.

14. Yes, the lunacy will escalate until there is some sort of right wing terrorist attack somewhere...
...either that or an assassination attempt on Obama. It wouldn't surprise me to see some sort of attack against Democrats, something like the anthrax attack we saw in 2001. It will probabally be in response to healthcare reform.

The scary thing that I have noticed is that the Republican punditry, FOX news and the Republicans in congress all seem to be trying to instigate violent acts. They are cheer leading the lunacy and trying to legitimize it by claiming the hateful rhetoric is just, 'regular folks who are mad.'

The up side to all of this is that the GOP has publicly gone Koo Koo. The lunatics have taken over the asylum. The GOP leaders in congress have lost control. The republican party is now led by FOX news. FOX news and the GOP are now one in the same.

They are driving all the normal people out of their party. If you hold any beliefs that resemble reality, you are not welcome in the GOP. Hispanics have been driven out to the point that their support within the GOP is now at the margin of error, 3%.

The more they play to their base, the further off the deep end their base goes and the crazier they become. It is a downward spiral that is feeding itself. The GOP has become so out of touch with reality that they are no longer relevant.

22. Faux is only the loudest and most egregious of the networks promoting the anti-Obama
agenda. CNN, MSNBC, CBS all have their share of knee-jerk coverage that only feeds the fire.

"The GOP has become so out of touch with reality that they are no longer relevant." If they're no longer relevant how is it that they have totally altered the content of the legislation to reform health care? How is it that they have managed to cow the Democratic Party leadership and turn them into centrists instead of Democrats? How is it that we are still spending hundreds of billions of dollars and wasting the lives of Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan--and at a faster clip than when BushCo was in charge?

All of this rhetoric about the demise of the Republican party is just propaganda. Don't buy it.

And remember that Hitler's National Socialist Party represented less than 1/3 of Germans when it took power. It's not about numbers. It's about commitment and passion. Every image that the networks show of reich-wingers bashing the President or calling his citizenship into question is stimulating the passion of the nutcases and making them more dangerous.

Every time I see those two words I get nervous. I always think it's about President Obama being assassinated
by one of the crazies out there and I hate having that feeling. I pray he's well protected but then again do
we really know?

29. Kennedy was pretty damn establishmentarian.
All of our presidents have been to an extent. Obama has attempted some major reforms. Financial reform will be coming soon as well. We haven't had a president propose so much in a very long time. Those on the right are convinced he is turning the country upside down.

JFK would have been regarded as a conservative by many people today. The trade embargo against Cuba was strengthened to its present form by his executive orders.

21. This has been something I've been thinking about since Obama announced he was running.
And now that he's won the Presidency he is the ultimate expression of the Right's biggest fear, a black man running America. And the biggest fear for them in that is that the black people will do unto them as they did unto the black people. It's a dangerous mix of guilt, hatred and fear.

However, there's no way for us to make progress in these areas without a lot of inherent risk. Challenging a centuries old way of thinking is always a dangerous game, and there's always the risk of blowback. But it has to be done, and if for no other reason, this alone makes Obama a true success story.

Neither was RFK. Neither was MLK.

As crazy as the current crop of fucktards are, none of them are going to get near the president. On the other hand, if I was a progressive member of Congress or the media, I'd be pretty damn worried about now.
