Newsmax column advocates a military coup in US
from TPM ==> http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2009/09/going_there.php

A new Newsmax column advocates a military coup to unseat Obama or usher in a period of "shared responsibility" between military government and a ceremonial Obama presidency. "A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama's radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible."

The author, John L. Perry, claims not to be 'advocating', only describing what he says is already being considered and is the best option available. But give it a read and you be the judge.

And just so we're totally clear, no, I'm not expecting any military coups. This is just one more nugget to add to the backdrop list of incitement now coming from the right.

Here's the squirrel ==> http://www.newsmax.com/john_perry/obama_military_coup/2009/09/29/266012.html

AND here's the nut...

Obama Risks a Domestic Military ‘Intervention’

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 10:35 AM

By: John L. Perry Article Font Size

There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.

America isn’t the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized. That it has never happened doesn’t mean it wont. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it. So, view the following through military eyes:

# Officers swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Unlike enlisted personnel, they do not swear to “obey the orders of the president of the United States.”

# Top military officers can see the Constitution they are sworn to defend being trampled as American institutions and enterprises are nationalized.

# They can see that Americans are increasingly alarmed that this nation, under President Barack Obama, may not even be recognizable as America by the 2012 election, in which he will surely seek continuation in office.

# They can see that the economy — ravaged by deficits, taxes, unemployment, and impending inflation — is financially reliant on foreign lender governments.

# They can see this president waging undeclared war on the intelligence community, without whose rigorous and independent functions the armed services are rendered blind in an ever-more hostile world overseas and at home.

# They can see the dismantling of defenses against missiles targeted at this nation by avowed enemies, even as America’s troop strength is allowed to sag.

# They can see the horror of major warfare erupting simultaneously in two, and possibly three, far-flung theaters before America can react in time.

# They can see the nation’s safety and their own military establishments and honor placed in jeopardy as never before.

So, if you are one of those observant military professionals, what do you do?

Wait until this president bungles into losing the war in Afghanistan, and Pakistan’s arsenal of nuclear bombs falls into the hands of militant Islam?

Wait until Israel is forced to launch air strikes on Iran’s nuclear-bomb plants, and the Middle East explodes, destabilizing or subjugating the Free World?

12. am I the only one taken aback by a favorable citation to the Smith Act on a progressive board?
I suggest anyone who thinks that the government should resurrect the dormant Smith Act to go after that Newsmax bozo should take a moment to study the history of this odious piece of legislation and read what true progressives like William O Douglas had to say about it.

13. I totally agree -- it made my blood run cold, too, when I saw it. As a fellow-traveler in a union
household, and as someone who salutes the striking truckers of Minneapolis, my home for several years, seeing this act quoted here pisses me off just a bit.

17. I think just telling the truth on them will suffice.
It's these wacky concepts I heard about called called "democracy" and "the free marketplace of ideas." That alone should keep the stupid at bay.

6. The way the Fox News Panels discuss this every day, one would
believe they are setting us up for a coup. Whatever the
Military says or wants should be Gospel.

There is no one more supportive of the Military than myself.
This is not a dig at the Military.

Fox has always pushed the NeoCon worldview. But what they
are doing now is over the top. Playing McCrystol against
Obama. However, between their mega hawkishness and careless
commentary, they sound as if when the Military speaks we
should all jump.

The Military should not be happy with this. WE HAVE A CIVILIAN
LEADER of DEFENSE for a REASON.
