A woman in the crowd wears a surgical mask as US President Barack Obama (R) greets members of the audience at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) after making an announcement regarding the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act at NIH in Bethesda, MD, September 30, 2009. 1. Is that a hospital band on her wrist? Maybe she thinks she could be contagious
and is wearing the mask out of consideration of others attending the speech.

Perhaps she is already sick and was advised to wear a mask. I know in Korea a lot of people wear masks like this in the winter to prevent themselves , or others from getting sick. It's very common there.

13. Masks are common around NIH for lots of obvious reasons. What's odd to me is
the woman with the mask seems to be about the only one NOT looking at the President.

When my mother was on chemo she was told to wear a mask around other people, especially crowds to avoid infection.
