Everyone, We Lost The Olympics. SO WHAT!
The sun is still shining where I sit. Obama is still president, and he will continue to be for the next 3+ years. We still have the majorities in Congress. Healthcare reform is still a strong possibility, and a public option is still viable.

Yes, we lost out on the Olympics, and it's a bummer to some. However, nothing major has changed at all. You gotta stop letting the Becks and the Limbaughs get to you. Who's their hero? Sarah Palin? Obama can lose a 1,000 Olympic bids. I'd still rather have him as my leader than Sarah Palin.

1. Personally
I'm more interested in real economic recovery and bringing decent jobs back to the United States than I am on whether or not we have a good TV show filmed here in 7 years.

2. 'Healthcare reform is still a strong possibility' -- this is exactly wrong --
Insurace reorm is a strong possibility -- not health care.

19. Because Obama went there and gave it his
all and it went to Rio. If Chicago had gotten it..they'd bring up Ayers and Wright 24/7. Fuckers.

6. I'm with you. The pubs will try to drag this thing out but it will fizzle out
and we'll forget all about it. I'm sure Obama will be positive and mature going forward and his detractors will look puny...all we have to say to them is "Whose side are you on?"

11. Me too.
I agree. The Olympics are one big yawn to me. I do not understand watching sports in general. I have no stake in the outcome of other people's games. Why would I possibly be interested in watching other people play? I do not understand the fascination, or the "rooting" for a team.

15. I with you on this. Now, before anyone accuses me of being "anti-sports"...
I played competitive sports for over 11 years: baseball, football, track & field, and handball.

I was a pole vaulter in high school and I watched both the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. I was particularly interested in the performance of US athlete Bob Seagren.

However, television coverage of the Olympics has become piss-poor, particularly with regard to the field events. You'll see every second of the two-mile run, but only about 2 or 3 vaults, usually taped and only showing the winner and runners up.

And the f**king "up close and personal" interviews with the athletes and their bios are boring as all hell.

22. I agree. They were fun back when the networks covered the contests
But since they have become USA cheering sections, with their boring coverage of the "tragic life" of every US athlete, they are booooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrring.

28. I remember when Americans were actually curious about Nadia's life
Or Olga Korbut's.

Now they cut away from the main events whenever the U.S. competitor goes down low enough that it looks like they won't win!

The Olympics were mainly to guarantee job security for Mayor Daley and lucrative contracts for his rich pals.

27. two weeks or so ago I read analysis from 3 or so reporters from Chicago on a website
It was two weeks ago so I can't find the article anymore but one of them said that there was a huge change of Chicago falling in the first round. Supposedly, Chicago and Rio were favorites because they had a big chunk of IOC members who were going to vote for one or the other. Including the American and Brazilian members promising to vote for each other in the later rounds in case one of their cities fell. Madrid and Tokio had some solid votes that could keep them alive in the later rounds.

Rio was in 2nd place in the first round of voting and all those chicago votes went to Brazil in the second round. So the exageration around the fact that Chicago lost in the first round is surprising since this scenario was considered a possibility whether Obama went to Compenhagen or not.

3) Lake Placid - 1932 and 1980 Winter Games
4) Squaw Valley - 1960 Winter Games
