Mike Ditka backs Hughes in Ill. Senate race
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-il-senaterace-ditka,0,2641154.story

CHICAGO - Chicago Bears legend Mike Ditka is backing the little-known Patrick Hughes for the Republican Senate nomination in Illinois.

In a statement released Thursday by the Hughes campaign, Ditka praises the candidate's "mainstream values" and pledges to help any way he can.

Hughes says he is humbled to have the support of the former Bears coach and player.

Hughes is a Hinsdale real estate developer. He's up against U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk for the Senate nomination.

Kirk has angered many conservatives by supporting "cap and trade" legislation on global warming, backing abortion rights and supporting some gun control measures.

1. ditka is one of the hugest, most egomanical jackmunches ever to have
wasted the planet's oxygen

one of the luckiest, too, having ridden chicago's sports star-loving rubes to the bank for decades

“If God had wanted man to play soccer, He wouldn't have given us arms”

DITKA: You don't want to get me in politics now do you? I met a guy on the street corner the other day; he's going to file to run for president, too. Anybody can take a shot at it. I got nothing against Obama. My goodness, nobody would know who he was if I would have ran.

4. Then why didn't he run?

He had the chance to and didn't because he would have had his butt handed to him by Obama and the voters of Illinois.

I don't know how big he is in Chicago, but except for the football nuts I don't think many people here even remember him. Chicago is the only place that really matters here because they have more votes than the rest of Illinois put together. That is why I appreciated Obama campaigning in the whole state when he ran for the Senate. Usually no one in Southern Illinois ever sees the big boys in politics except on tv.

Off Subject. But speaking about seeing the big ones in politics, I was lucky enough to attend the memorial for our late Senator Paul Simon (along with over three thousand others) and got to see Senator Teddy Kennedy speak there. He walked up to the mike a weak old man but walked away a lion, his speech even on this occasion was that powerful.

6. Exactly.
It's all about ego. If you have a huge ego, you know your limitations. You don't run because a loss would BRUISE that ego.

Ditka knows he has way more power pulling strings from the sidelines than he ever could getting his ass handed to him by a Democrat in the general.

Case and point: The fact his endorsement is actually making news.
