Politifact reminds SNL that Obama didn't promise to withdraw from Iraq or close Gitmo this early
Edited on Mon Oct-05-09 11:45 AM by rmp yellow
SNL mocked Obama a couple of days ago for accomplishing "nothing" so far, including not having closed Guantanamo and withdrawn all our troops from Iraq, among other tings. But the non-partisan Politifact.com notes:

"Close Guantanamo Bay - (SNL said) Not Done." We've rated Obama's promise No. 177 Close the Guantanamo Detention Center as Stalled. Congress has been reluctant to fund the closure and press reports have indicated progress is not proceeding as the White House had hoped. Still, Obama gave himself a year to get this done, and that's not until January 2010.

• "Out of Iraq - (SNL Said) Not Done." Actually, Obama did not promise to have troops out during his first year; he promised to remove them in approximately 16 months. We rated Obama's promise No. 125, Direct military leaders to end the war in Iraq, as Promise Kept and his promise No. 126, Begin removing combat troops from Iraq, as In the Works.

1. The opening bit on SNL was just odd. I guess they were throwing a bone to the right.

2. I say good on SNL for putting pressure on Obama
Sarah Palin never actually said the words "I can see Russia from my house," either, but SNL took her earlier statements on Russia and Alaska and ran with it.

It's political satire. And Obama needs to be reminded that we want results. If it takes a little humor to get the point across, I'm game.

4. Its a crock of shit because he has been holding up HIS end of those promises just fine.
Its not "putting pressure on Obama", its misrepresenting the truth entirely and it ain't funny.

6. About seeing Russia from Alaska
"They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska."

You're getting results.

24. Yeah, unfortunatly those kind of lies from
the "left" happen all the time.

They lose their validity..which is too bad..they'd have enough reality to rage on about but no. Lying to get their way? No problem.

26. Yeah, who cares if the "pressure" is based on lies or misrepresentations.
If they say, next week, that "Obama has failed to work with Congress repeal abortion rights," that'll be hilarious too!

3. This is why making cynical comments about difficult actions is utter bullshit.
And why I failed to find the humor in that sketch, because I simply couldn't connect its irony to anything in reality.

7. Yep, it is the voters' fault for voting for hope, instead of another politician
I'll keep that in mind when we try to get people to vote in 2010 that we got to vote in 2008.

10. He should just resign now.
Why hasn't he fixed everything already?? He's been in office for a whole 9 months! It's not like he has 4 years to fix Bush's mess.

He hasn't done ANYTHING!!

Why, Obama, Why?

27. Since when does stating a basic fact about the length of the President's term
equate to waving pom-poms?

You're dropping that bar conveniently low just to level an insult.

9. While there was nervous laughter, there was no applause....
.... except for a bit at the very end.

Compare that to sketches they did about Palin .... or even this one they did making fun of the President's calm nature...

http://www.clipser.com/watch_video/1246959

When the audience agrees with what they're saying, they cheer ..... all I heard was a bit of nervous ("OMG! Are they going there!!!") laughter.

Sure take Obama to task but at least make it funny. I was wondering if there was some gofer holding up laugh and applause signs.

17. It was comedy, and it was funny.
Stop acting like you were personally attacked.

Why in the fuck would I contact NBC?

Here's how I would have written it though: I would have had him in a mock campaign ad, starting his run for re-election WAY EARLY, during the US Tennis Open that concluded recently. I would have had him reading from the teleprompter, looking like he were watching a tennis match. When Serena threw her fit, I would have him inviting her to join his team on health care reform.

It's fucking comedy. My. Fucking. Goodness.

Saturday night, one of the last things I said to the Ms. was something to the effect of "Oh Boy, I can't wait to see how many DUers are offended to the core over this". Glad to say I wasn't disappointed. Some pretty funny reading yesterday, and well, today also it now seems.

So we fact check comedy now that Obama is President, and ask that fellow believers contact the source. A sure sign that this country is beyond repair...

18. That's the first thing I thought about when watching the skit. They got so many things wrong...
1. Obama promised to get out of Iraq. He didn't give an exact date. He said that he would get out of Iraq "responsibly." And I think he said most troops out in 16 months and all troops should be completely out no later than 2013. It is a phased withdrawal.
2. Obama did promise to close Gitmo but didn't say when.
3. The health care slam was simply unfair. It's not necessarily Obama's fault directly that nothing has been done, though I think he could have been more forceful in the beginning, and I think he should have step out sooner to attack Republican lies. But he can't do much to control the corporatists in his party.
4. Afghanistan was not his war. He had stated repeatedly that the job wasn't finished there, so he had to finish it. It's so incredibly unfair to attack Obama when he did not create this mess in the first place.

19. SNL used manipulative misdirection regarding the issue of health care in that opening skit as well,
Edited on Mon Oct-05-09 01:07 PM by Uncle Joe
by only addressing right wing anger toward the #1 issue in the nation of potential health care reform and by giving in to the right wing's label of "communism or nazism", even if only done obliquely by humor it carried right wing water.

Left wing anger over lack of progress regarding health care and knowledge of very real death panels under the existing for profit "health" coverage system eluded SNL's satire.

I believe this is because they know NBC just like the rest of the corporate media wouldn't sell as many commercials to "health" insurance corporations and Big Pharma if the people had universal, single payer, Medicare coverage for every American from the cradle to the grave.

SNL may be irreverent, and at times it may still be funny, but in the end they tow the corporate line and are nothing like the original broadcast when George Carlin hosted the program, that was satire for "We the People," today it's satire for corporations.

Thanks for the thread, rmp yellow.

25. No shit. I'm glad I'm not the only one calling bullshit.
I'm all for poking fun at the President (all Presidents!), but that doesn't mean they can just make shit up. Besides, it's not funny when it doesn't have the ring of thruth.

SNL's season premier was the worst show they've done in YEARS, maybe decades. Last week's was slightly better, though not much. WTF happened to them over the summer?

28. When it comes to serious matters that are about life and death.....
Comedy should veer away from such.

War is not a laughing matter,
and Gitmo isn't either.
The fact that they felt it appropriate to lampoon
these topics tell me all I need to know about SNL's writers;
they say or do anything for a laugh, as though there's something funny,
where there isn't.
