1994 Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Yasser Arafat
Yitzhak Rabin
Shimon Peres

The rationale behind the award:

"for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East"

Three men who never accomplished that goal. However, it was awarded to them based on their intent.

Did their winning it cheapen the award?

No.

You see, the Nobel Peace Prize is often given to a group who uses their influence to push peace. Their goals might not be accomplished, but often that isn't a requirement. Because I'm sure even the Norwegian Nobel Committee realizes how difficult it is to attain peace.

Pres. Obama might not be deserving based on accomplishments alone, but it is the promise he brings - and the stature with it - that separates him from other possible winners. He is advocating for a more united and peaceful world and doing it as the most powerful man on the planet.

He may fail. But it won't be for a lack of trying.

1. If Obama fails, it'll be for the same reasons as that triumvirate:
Namely, that the people they represented didn't want them to succeed. And that doesn't just go for right-wing America either. I just hope that Obama doesn't end up like Rabin.

2. Bush tried to bring democracy to the middle east,
and he tried to end two wars at the same time, in the name of democracy, by winning them. He spent billions and years on trying to end those wars.

:)

4. I think the Nobel Comittee can distinguish intent from rhetoric, though...
His intent was to fuck up two countries full of "heathens" and then sell them off to Americans.

5. here here - and anyone who can turn this country around thus far has my support

it's not like he lobbied for the award so for folks to attack for his receiving/accepting it, as humbly as he did, is just plain out of reality.

6. The only reason it was never achieved was because Rabin was assassinated .....
by a right-wing extremist from his own country. The right then took control of the government and stalled the whole process.

7. Obama's victory did not cheapen the award at all.
But it's certainly ok if some feel he is not yet deserving at this time, even according to the rationale behind his winning. And that's ok.
