Granny Sarah is Not Easily Impressed

She's probably the ONLY person wondering what took them so long. ;)

Kenyan grandmother is happy for Obama
By TOM MALITI (AP) – 19 hours ago

KOGELO, Kenya — President Barack Obama's Kenyan step-grandmother on Saturday advised this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner to be of good character and continue to work for peace.

Sitting on a plastic chair outside her compound in the quite village of Kogelo, Sarah Obama told The Associate Press she believes her step-grandson's surprise win is a gift from God.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee stunned many with its decision to award Obama the prize so early in his presidency for his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms and defuse tensions through diplomacy.

The announcement was met with joy in Kenya, which has a special regard for Obama, the son of a Kenyan economist and an American anthropologist.

Radio shows interrupted their programming Friday, and traders in the market huddled around hand-held radios and touts yelled the news to each other from the windows of local minibuses known as matatus. Many are already decorated with Obama's picture.

"I am happy for him," the elderly Obama told the AP outside her compound in the village of tree-lined dirt roads and maize crops where Obama's father grew up.

Sarah Obama said she learned of the award from Auma Obama, one of the president's Kenyan stepsisters, who called from the United States.

She defended the president from those who say he has received the prize too early, saying it "is God-given, whether it is too early or not. But if you deserve an award you get it."

"I want him to be of good character and do good things and continue bringing peace because I love peace," she said.

13. "The son of a Kenyan economist and an American anthropologist"... I like that
In the US, President Obama is forever described as "the son of a black man and a white woman," which has a different flavor, given our history. Their description is richer somehow, not stripped of race but enhanced by acknowledging their very different professions and national origins.

She said, ""I want him to be of good character and do good things ..." Spoken like a good grandma. We want that, too.

16. While I understand what you are saying......
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 07:02 AM by Clio the Leo
.... as someone who grew receiving a fair amount of mistreatment for BEING a white girl and woman who often dated black men, I cannot begin to describe the pride *I* feel when I read sentences like that. While I do not pretend to know the suffering of African Americans who could NOT simply walk away from the situation, I've heard my share of insults, received my share of demotions, and too often felt my safety in danger. Trying to determine where you wanted to eat on any given Friday night based on how you felt you might be treated was never something I relished.

I was always told, "just think of how the children will be treated, it's not fair to them" ..... well, last year, I witnessed one of those children being given the highest honor anyone can receive. Not only that, but you have the President's brother in law, Craig Robinson, who is married to a white woman. An interracial couple now an extended part of THE first family. Two things I certainly never thought I would see in my lifetime.

So, again, I understand what YOU are saying, but that phrase brings me a great deal of pride.

It's a matter of personal vindication. ;)

18. When I see pix of the extended Obama ohana, I see what I grew up seeing in Hawai'i: the world...
... in one family. His Indonesian-Haole sister married a Chinese man from Canada. He married an African-American woman. His wife's brother married a white woman. His haole Tutu lived to be the matriarch of all of this, to witness this. This is my "normal" that lives in my heart no matter how many decades it's been since I moved away to the Mainland. To me it is not solely that I feared we might never finally break the presidential race barrier -- it is that I never, ever expected to see this kind of family at all in the White House. Sasha and Malia and their cousins -- those kid are (I deeply hope) our future.

I'm so glad for you. I'm so glad for me. I'm so glad for all of us.

20. They made a mistake in the story.
Sarah Obama said she learned of the award from Auma Obama, one of the president's Kenyan stepsisters, who called from the United States.

Auma is his half-sister, not his stepsister. They share a father.
