AP - The Insurance Industry Joins Liberals In Attacking The Baucus Plan!
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 12:06 AM by TomCADem
Talk about strange bed fellows!

I guess we were all wrong. The insurance industry is apparently looking out for American families in showing that the Baucus bill "would add $1,700 a year to the cost of family coverage in 2013." I guess we owe the insurance industry an apology. They were just looking out for the little guy.

Insurers escalate criticism of health overhaul
Trade group's study shows Senate bill would shift costs to privately insured

WASHINGTON - The insurance industry sharply escalated its criticism of the Senate health care bill Sunday, charging that the legislation would shift costs to privately insured people, raising the price of a typical policy by hundreds of dollars annually.

A spokesman for Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., whose 10-year, $829 billion overhaul plan faces a final committee vote Tuesday, questioned the credibility of the late-innings cost estimate. "It's a health insurance company hatchet job, plain and simple," said Scott Mulhauser.

Until recently, the health insurance industry has been working behind the scenes to shape legislation, while publicly endorsing President Barack Obama's goal of affordable coverage for all Americans. The fragile alliance is growing strained as legislation advances toward floor votes in the House and Senate.

Late Sunday, the industry trade group America's Health Insurance Plans sent its member companies a new accounting firm study that projects the legislation would add $1,700 a year to the cost of family coverage in 2013, when most of the major provisions in the bill would be in effect.

1. I agree that the Baucus bill is a poison pill and should die. However, I think the
insurance companies want it to die so there will be NO reform, while I want it to die so we can REAL reform.

Strange bedfellows...only in the means....certainly not the ends.

7. It doesn't matter the industry opposes the Baucus bill. To the Left, the Baucus bill should die
Mandates without a public option would be a bonanza to the industry, and their stock holders.

8. I Thought It Was An Enemy of My Enemy IS My Friend...
The true test is going to be if DUers start citing the numbers given in the insurance company study as gospel.

3. But can we waste time on Baucus, who doesn't want public option? Do we need the Finance Cmte, or
use just the HELP bill and conerence all the ideas together?

Guess AHIP wanted 100% mandated coverage for maximum windfall, and deals like Pharma and the hospitals.

6. Many here feel that they "wrote" the Baucus bill, why are they trying to kill it?

Very strange. In my opinion the bill is very insurance company friendly. Perhaps they suspect that the final bill will be much less to their liking.
