Turning Obama into a bogeyman
a great comment I saw over on Jack & Jill Politics. Wanted to share it here.

Turning President Obama into a Bogeyman

The outright disrespect that came pouring from both the right and the left since Friday has obviously been saddening, but more importantly, it awoke me to a frightening pattern. The powerbrokers in this society, both conservative and progressive are actively trying to minimize President Obama's footprint in history. Conservative NYT columnist Ross Douthat's piece today claiming that the title "Barack Obama, Nobel Laureate" was the single most disgraceful appellation that this President could have entered in any legacy write-up about him. He stated:

"But by accepting the prize, he’s made failure, if and when it comes, that much more embarrassing and difficult to bear. What’s more, he’s etched in stone the phrase with which critics will dismiss his presidency.

Slick Willie. Tricky Dick. Jimmy “Malaise” Carter. Dubya the Incompetent.

And now Barack Obama, Nobel laureate."

In other words, they want this President to perform the janitorial work for every interest group, plus the economy, two wars, prevent terrorism, do/don't do healthcare, do/don't improve education, do/don't save the planet and secure energy supplies. He should just clan up this country's sh*t. But he should not be remembered for it. He should become as forgettable as the majority of the last 43 white male presidents save the few like Raygun, Clinton, LBJ, FDR.

And now, The Nobel peace Prize complicates that desire to marginalize him from history even before he has served out his term, Truly sad. So they turn him into a figure to be ridiculed at every turn, with people from around the world wondering what the fu*k is wrong with us. I bet the Norwegians are horrified by the reaction stateside. How could we turn our back so quickly on a guy we ourselves elected and had inspire the whole world.

But fortunately, the rest of the world will not allow him to be forgotten. Sorry Americans, the world ain't buying your gig this time. President Obama belongs to the whole world now and there's nothing you can do to change that.

2. Please tell us who the progressive "powerbrokers" are
Edited on Tue Oct-13-09 11:11 AM by brentspeak
The same "powerbrokers" who can only get so far as the White House gates while lobbyists like Billy Tauzin get invited in?

11. A calculated move to silence them, even temporarily, until passed through 5 cmtes. Now we work in
earnest, with them or without them.

3. The whole thing about the Nobel Prize is that he never asked for it, wanted it, campaigned to get it
The criticism lodged at Obama for this is in fact, ridiculous.

10. Excellent looking new Peacetrain, Peacetrain!
Edited on Tue Oct-13-09 11:39 AM by JuniperLea
I'm not completely satisfied with Obama... but when these cretins start giving him the business, I get real protective real quick.

I hope others feel the same.

I hope this massive divide and conquer deal fails.

I hope these vitriolic idiots see the irony soon.

See! I still have a lot of hope!

:hi:

13. Thank you JuniperLea
That was the second one you sent last year... I thought it would be perfect for Halloween!!

Now to find a Christmas Peacetrain..

Anyway, I know what you mean about not agreeing with the President on everything. I sure don't. But he is the best thing we have had in office in decades, and I am not going to kneecap him now.

The right has a media machine in place with talk radio, Fox etc, that the left does not. We may look good on paper, but the right is many rungs ahead of us in controlling the message.

They just have to hammer negatively 24/7 and a lie repeated often enough starts to sound like the truth to the "average" voter.

14. I don't watch corporatemedia but
I can imagine how they haven't changed since Nov 2002 when I dropped them.

I do see the vitriol on DU from anonymous sources.

Not really surprised though..there's always going to be those who project nothing is ever good enough and those who are jealous because it's too good.

7. Scary and sad
I went to a Miami Dolphins game last night and there was a lot of hoopla to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. So a bunch of celebrities were on the big monitors saying something.

President Obama was on the monitor saying some bs about Hispanic Heritage Month, but the scary part was that the moment, I mean before he even opened his mouth, the crowd started booing. Not just the knee jerk Republican Cuban Americans, no all around me people were booing.

I understand if you don't want to hear a 3 minute message from the President during a football game giving kind of the same strive for success message he gave those school kids, but to reflexively start booing the moment his image came on the screen?

I was so miserable and embarrassed for my country. These people do not seem to understand the potential for greatness that this man has. They've been poisoned by this incessant, venemous tea-bagger crap. It's seeped into the mainstream. And I just don't think we can dismiss it as crazy tea baggers any more. I think this campaign to deligitimize him, denigrate him, cast him as some affirmative action, teleprompter king who is trying to destroy our country is seeping into the main culture. I mean the man does good things and is demonized for it. Black is white and white is black. The man can do no right for some people, both on the left and the right.

I mean, I don't know the demographics of football fans. I expect sports fans to be kinda rude and drunk, but this was just over the top. I said to my friend, who is not a big fan of Obama's, but refrained from booing, you know, I hated George Bush, but I respected the fact that he was my President and I would not boo him at a public forum. I have respect for the office. I felt very bad when he was booed at Obama's inauguration.

It was just very disheartening.

8. He cured cancer! What an asswipe!
He fed all the hungry people in the whole freaking world! What a sicko! I'm sick of his shit! Who does he think he is? Jesus? Oh, wait... being like Jesus is a bad thing? Being a savior, a saint, a messiah from on high is a bad thing? Get thee to a dictionary, dipshits!

Yeah, it's getting way past stupid now.

I said this about the Norwegians for days now... they have every right to look down their noses at us for this assholery. Still, Obama's ratings went up to 56% according to Gallup, so it's probably closer to 60%. Nice little post-prize kick:)

perspective instead of joyfully jumping on the bandwagon to demonize the president.

15. Precisely, it complicates the work in progress
to marginalize President Obama.

That put a real wrench in their relentless machinery.

and wouldn't change their minds anyway. Some people are deadset on Obamahate.
