TOPEKA | Kansas Democratic Chairman Larry Gates announced Friday that he will not run for governor next year.
Gates, for months mentioned as a likely candidate, said he considered running but decided he can’t concentrate on a statewide race and his career at the same time.
U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, a Republican, is running for governor, but Democrats have no announced candidates. The incumbent, Democrat Mark Parkinson, has said he won’t run.
Gates, a Johnson County lawyer, predicted the Democrats would find a good candidate.
“There are tremendously qualified candidates who are considering this race.”
