What burdens on a state does the PO impose?
Edited on Thu Oct-22-09 07:08 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
If a state was going to opt-out (I doubt any actually would, but "if") there would have to be a reason. Not a good reason, but something-- some pretext, justification, rationalization, claim... something.

So the question is, What burdens are imposed on states by POs under consideration that a state would be avoided by opting out?

This is not a rhetorical question. I have no idea what the level of state contribution or responsibility might be.

1. My gut says...
This is a way for insurance companies to buy state officials... make them opt out so the insurance company can operate as per usual.

3. It will hurt their insurance industry
Other than that, there really isn't any justification for a state to opt out of public option. It would actually be political suicide to want to opt out of it if the PO lowers the costs of coverage.

The opt out just seems like a safety net in case the Republicans fears about the PO are actually true, they have the option of getting rid of it.

4. Thank you for asking this.....
.... my Gov was making this claim last week saying Congress was attempting to push off a "735 million unfunded liability" onto the state of TN. I dont understand it, but haven't had time to reasearch it...

I DO know we have two or three insurance company headquarters here in my city. But I'm not clear how big of an area those companies cover.
