Obama’s Health Care Speech to Congress

Published: September 9, 2009

skip

As soon as I sign this bill, it will be against the law for insurance companies to drop your coverage when you get sick or water it down when you need it most. They will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or a lifetime. We will place a limit on how much you can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses, because in the United States of America, no one should go broke because they get sick. And insurance companies will be required to cover, with no extra charge, routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms and colonoscopies – because there's no reason we shouldn't be catching diseases like breast cancer and colon cancer before they get worse. That makes sense, it saves money, and it saves lives.

That's what Americans who have health insurance can expect from this plan – more security and stability.

You know, I read the entire thing all over again and I did not see specifically mentioned "prior conditions". Oops! found it! Edited to reflect that he absolutely addresses (in a good way) prior conditions.
************************************************************************************************************************************
from the speech:

In the meantime, for those Americans who can't get insurance today because they have pre-existing medical conditions, we will immediately offer low-cost coverage that will protect you against financial ruin if you become seriously ill. This was a good idea when Senator John McCain proposed it in the campaign, it's a good idea now, and we should embrace it

OK - well I just want to remind him about this speech and that I'm counting on both him AND the Congress to deliver.

2. evening kick - I think it's worth it to remember this address to Congress.
Note how there's nothing about "triggers" or "opt-outs" in it.

3. Oh Well, Time Will Tell... And I Bet That A Bill With Triggers Or Opt Out
will be cheered by so many here at DU. I've stopped trying to "figure out" what will happen because it seems to change every day. But one thing I do know, the bill has traveled a very far distance from SINGLE PAYER!

And probably from Public Option too! I also think that the insurance companies have been raising their rates because the "might" have made some concessions, and they don't want to give up ANYTHING!

Yes, I do sound cynical don't I? So be it! I think any bill that passes will be lauded and cheered regardless of what's in it.

JMHO!

4. Where are the price controls on insurance for those with previously existing conditions?
Without them, merely banning the practice is useless to all but those who are very rich and very sick.

5. His quote says they will immediately offer "low cost" insurance to those
with Prior conditions..

I just want this speech to come to fruition. If we get something that resembles nothing close in this spech - what is the answer - Olympia Snowe didn't like it?

6. I haven't seen anything remotely like that in actual legislation
One way to get low cost insurance for everyone is Medicare for All. If we can only move incrementally, then start letting people voluntarily enroll.

7. That's why I thought it was important to remind people about this very big deal speech
to Congress that occurred just a little over a month ago.

I think we should be able to believe that this is the White House position. I always get incredibly angry when I keep reading stuff about the insurers being allowed to stick it to us until 2011 or 2013 in terms of prior conditions, caps, etc.

His speech say "immediately" cease those practices and offer low cost insurance to the uninsured with priors immediately.
