"Bush's Father Wrote to General About Guard Service
---------------------------------------------------
By Charles Aldinger

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Friday released more documents on President Bush's Vietnam-era Air National Guard Service, including a letter from his then-congressman father George Bush thanking a general for 'taking interest in a brand new Air Force trainee.'

"Dozens of pages of documents, including historical records of the Air Guard unit in which Bush served, were released on orders from the White House. His National Guard service, which critics have charged was performed to avoid going into combat, has become an issue of contention in the presidential race.

" 'That a major general in the Air Force would take interest in a brand new Air Force trainee made a big impression on me,' then Texas Rep. George Bush wrote to Maj. Gen. G.B. Greene Jr., commander of the Lackland Air Force Base Military Training Center, on Sept. 11, 1968.

"George Bush, who himself also later became president, referred to a letter that he had received from Greene and said that his son was 'anxiously looking forward to going to flight school and, with parental pride, I do have the feeling that he will be a gung ho member of the U.S. Air Force.'

"White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said after the documents were released that the letter was a normal parental reaction. 'Obviously, it's just a letter from a proud father after his son was already in training,' she said.

"CONTROVERSY OVER ALABAMA SERVICE

"The letter was written shortly after young Bush joined the guard for pilot training. He later switched to the Alabama Air National Guard and hundreds of pages of documents and records records released to date by the White House have not settled a controversy over allegations that Bush did not complete required training in Alabama."

(why a document dump on Friday night? . . . and does anyone have another source to view other documents from this dump?)

1. Fridays are the best days
to do a major document dump or news story break because there is something about the collection national memory that means it is old news by Monday. And just no big deal. So you can guess who is behind this one.

2. Look...
...if Dubya's desertion was going to be a big deal, it would have happened by now. For all our humping of this story, it just is not going over. The public clearly does not give a shit about what Dubya did or did not do during the Vietnam War. They think he's protecting us from EVIL EVIL EVIL Islamic terrorists NOW, and that's all they give the tiniest shit about. They don't care that the economy tanked under Dubya or that he sold the environment to his extraction industry paymasters or that Ashcroft fancies himself as an American ayatollah or that 17,000 US soldiers have been wounded or that Americans are going to start stitching Canadian flags to their backpacks again any day now. They don't even appear to notice that Osama Bin Laden is still out there. George W. Bush is a "strong" leader who has kept us "safe" - until Kerry can dislodge this notion from the collective American brainpan (and I admit he has started to make a serious effort to try to do exactly that), nothing else matters.

4. At least we can expose that the bushes are all above the Law...
well they make the laws for the little people beneath them. What a bunch of bastards. I've never liked that george senior. It's written all over him that he's just a rich snob, much like David Dreier.
