Will a private insurance mandate lead to a mass exodus of Americans (can't afford to live here)?
Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 09:49 PM by brentspeak
If Obama signs a law forcing citizens to somehow cough up an extra $1,000/month (at least) to pay insurance bloodsuckers for the "right" to have private health insurance, that would pretty much burst the seams for many: can't pay what you haven't got.

With or without a mandate, an exodus of American economic refugees seems inevitable; a mandate would cause the exodus to grow and move out faster, though.

2. And HE would be exempt because he's not a citizen!
Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 09:53 PM by Clio the Leo
Good thinking.

Finance Committee
Exemptions will be granted for financial hardship, religious objections, American Indians, and if the lowest cost plan option exceeds 8% of an individual’s income or if the individual has income below 133% of the poverty level.

House Bill
Exceptions granted for dependents, religious objections, and financial hardship.

5. Who decides if a person's hardship claim is valid?
I doubt that they'll just take someone's word for it.

And, if a person makes more than the income limit for subsidies (currently 4x the poverty level in the House bill) your premium can equal 11% of your income plus up to $5,000 (single) or $10,000 (family) in "cost-sharing" (the bill's euphemism for copays and deductibles).

4. Perhaps it would create the desire, but...

...there are a lot of barriers in the way of people seeking to migrate. One of the "triumphs" of globalization is that it has facilitated the free movement of rich people's capital, while ensuring that poor people stay put. That's how the corrupt machine works. Americans trying to flee abroad will find many of the same barriers that immigrants to America face.

Nationalism, class, economic power, education, have all erected borders, physical and mental, that alienate humanity from itself. It is not incidental that these divisions fuel the capitalist system. The same way heat differentials power an engine, human differentials power capitalist economies. That is why free immigration is so abhorrent to capitalists: without a poverty gradient, the machine just won't work.

8. No, it would just increase the number of deadbeats every year.
Most in violation of the law.

Deadbeat= the uninsured post the insurance co. giveaway.

CBO estimates 12 million, I predict at least double that amount considering the numbers of working class with nothing left for co pays and deductibles after post subsidy premiums are paid combined with no cost controls except for the "market". And at this point if people think our version of "free market" capitalism brings down prices especially when we are all forced to buy we really are a nation of dim bulbs.

10. Very few countries let people from other countries just move there.
Americans who are allowed to move to other countries are generally already doing well enough economically here that they could afford the insurance anyway.

$12,000.00 a year? Could you post that part of the bill or a link?

That exodus of expatriot Americans sounds way to libertarian for my blood.

Yeah, people will be streaming out of the country.

And go where, exactly? They don't have the money for health care, but they can find the dough to leave the country?

Really getting into the 'black helicopter' and 'chemtrail' loonie zone now.

It was written by a banking stooge here on DU who was defending NOT legislating high interest rates on credit cards, claiming the real reason the legislation was stopped was not because the Senators were paid off by the banking industry, but because...

24. Just because Sanders introduced it doesn't mean it's constitutional

The issue is: why did others oppose it. I'm assuming because they think it violates federalism.

So explaining federalism is to be equated to the batshit crazy idea that Americans are going to leave the US in droves because their health care premiums are reduced and there are no longer previously existing condition clauses.

You know, you are way beyond help at this point.

:silly:  :silly:

As you can see by the comments on this thread, most people think you're insane.
