Since the 70's Va. has voted in a Gov., in the party opposite of the sitting Presidents party

That is a good 40 year history,that would predict a Republican win. Just saying, before all get too bound up by a Republican win in Va., know the voting record of the state.

Virginia in not only for "Lovers", but contrariness in its voting populace. They give New England a run for their money in that arena. I love Virginia, dang when I go visit there, it has everything.. from the mountains in the southwest.. to prairies in the middle to the the sea-side of the eastern shore.

If Deeds did win, it would be off the cliff historically and running against the pre-existing odds.

EDIT to add.. before you ask me to go Google the Virginia elections for the last 40 years.. I am reporting it from CNN and MSNBC..

Virginia elected Mark Warner in 2001 less than two months after 9/11, when Bush's approval ratings were in the 90s. Then in the 2002 mid-terms, the Democrats got thrashed.

So CNN and MSNBC are actually reporting history instead of just talking out of their asses about how it's all a referendeum on Obama, no history required?

..... how many of the elections today have either a GOP incumbent or are taking place in GOP leaning districts. This whole notion of the Dem losses being a message to the President on how he's doing is, as we all know, a dog that won't hunt.

is to me, more indicative of where we are as a nation

Corzine the Dem in NJ is an incumbent and in VA, the Governor can only hold office for one consecutive term, so both the Repub and the Dem are new and Deeds the Dem faced a three way primary which didn't help much once the general rolled around.

If Deeds did win..now that would be the upset..

It's only a period of 40 years.

I'm sure that not every election for Governor in Virginia had well qualified candidates.

I got out and voted Democrat right down the line in VA today. While they're flawed the Republicans are even more so. I'll be supporting President Obama and the party as best I may for his entire term, then I will assess if further support is warranted.
