Davis Prefers Congress After All

Rep. Danny K. Davis has decided to run for an eighth term in in Congress instead of trying to become president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners.

Davis announced he was running for board president in June 2009, but also circulated nominating petitions for re-election to his House seat.

Davis filed for both races last week, but he announced Monday morning -- the final day to remove petitions under state law -- that he wanted to remain in Washington.

Several candidates, including a handful of local office holders, had filed to run for Davis' seat. According to online records from the state of Illinois, only one candidate's name has been withdrawn from the House race so far.

Alderman Sharon Dixon and real estate businessman Jim Ascot have said they intended to stay in the race for Congress no matter what Davis decided. Ascot underscored that by posting a statement on his campaign Web site calling Davis' decision a political game and "evidence that my opponent is just another career politician."
