1. Thank you, I wondered about what he left. It reminded me of the tender Jewish custom of leaving
stones on a gravesite. I found it very touching.

2. How are they going to keep the coin from getting stolen?
Are they going to secure them somehow to the marker?

13. This is the Army we're talking about.....
.... taking a memento from the memorial of a fallen fellow soldier? Won't happen.

I didn't say they would be the ones doing it. Last I checked, almost anyone can get onto a cemetery.

19. While I'm not certain of the coins final dispositin....
Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 12:30 PM by Clio the Leo
.... he didn't leave them at a grave site. They were at the memorials at the Ft. Hood ceremony yesterday....

I would imagine that if the coins are not given to the families, they'll go into an archives, safe and sound. ;)

20. Thanks, that clears it up
Did know it was a ceremonial marker. I thought he may of went to the Ft Hood cemetery and laid a coin by the markers out there.

10. They are called 'challenge coins'...
From Fox, of all places.
http://whitehouse.blogs.foxnews.com/2009/11/10/the-commander-in-chief-pays-tribute/

November 10, 2009
The Commander-in-Chief pays tribute

President and Mrs Obama attended a memorial service today, honoring the 13 who were killed last week at Fort Hood.

Each of the victims was represented by their photo, resting below the traditional military tribute - combat boots with an inverted riffle topped with a helmet. Following his remarks, President Obama walked along the 13 pairs of boots placing the commander-in-chief's coin next to each photo.

The coin the president left, like the one below, is called a "challenge coin." According to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the President gives one to most military members he meets - he even distributed them to wounded soldiers he met at a recent visit to Walter Reed, and laid one on each of the coffins at the dignified transfer he attended at Dover.

12. That explains where the concept of the "collectors coins" come from...
.... I had always wondered who's idea it was to take coin, put something special on it and make it a commemorative item. Comes from the military.

But of course THIS is 10,000 times cooler than anything you can buy from the Franklin Mint.

18. A handsome coin indeed.
The black adds a nice gravitas to it. Poor Clinton's WH looks like a 1950's 'motorhotel' and the heavy clouds over Duh-bya's are nothing if not appropriate.

What do you want to bet there's already a mile-long poutrage thread on CreepRepublic about "ZOMG! Obama put BLACK on the coin! Our way of life iz deztroied!1!!1!"

Freeper outrage still possible w/blue, of course.

Then again, if he'd chosen RED... "ZOMG! Commie coins!"

While his looks more like the official presidential seal and that makes his look more professional. Again this is just what I think.
