Doing the Right Thing With the 9/11 Plotters

Attorney General Eric Holder will announce today that the five suspects most closely tied to the September 11th attacks will be moved to New York City and tried in civilian courts. The suspects include: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Waleed bin Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi, and Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has confessed to masterminding the plot, selling it to bin-Laden, and working out the logistics.

Waleed bin Attash is accused of involvement in the 1998 African Embassy bombings, the 2000 attack on the USS Cole, and of recruiting some of the so-called 'muscle hijackers.'

Ramzi Binalshibh was a member of the Hamburg cell who attempted to enter the United States for pilot training but was rejected. He worked as a liaison between Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Mohammed Atta.

Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi allegedly financed the hijackers from the United Arab Emirates and facilitated the travel of the 'muscle hijackers.'

Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali (aka Ammar al-Baluchi) is accused of providing logistical support for the hijackers, as well as cultural training for their time spent in America.

These five detainees are the so-called worst of the worst. Much of the evidence against them is tainted by torture. However, there remains banking, travel, and electronic records that can implicate them. If these men can be tried in civilian courts then it is hard to see why all of the detainees cannot be tried in civilian courts. I hope the Obama administration gets credit for this from the same people who have been justly critical of them on these issues so far.

In related news, President Obama's legal counsel, Greg Craig, is being replaced by Anita Dunn's husband, Bob Bauer.

Let's see if the Republicans and Harry Reid throw another fit over the horror of bringing al-Qaeda suspects to the United States for trial.

1. I look forward to a New York jury sealing these bastards' fates.
Death or a life rotting in a cell--no matter. Justice will be done, and it will be done within blocks of the crime scene.

9/11 Families Want Guantánamo Detainees Prosecuted In Federal Court

NEW YORK - November 10 - A new video released by the American Civil Liberties Union today features family members of 9/11 victims calling for federal trials of terrorism suspects. The Obama administration is expected to announce by November 16 whether certain Guantánamo detainees will be transferred to the U.S. for trial in federal courts or be tried in the illegitimate military commissions.

“It is of utmost importance to me that those who were responsible for the attacks of 9/11 face a court,” says Adele Welty in the ACLU video. Her son was a New York firefighter killed at the World Trade Center.

“It’s very important to me that we get the right people,” says John Leinung, whose stepson was killed while working in the Twin Towers. “That the right people are punished or held to account for what happened on 9/11.”

Pat Perry, whose son was a police offer killed on 9/11, says she would rather see the Guantánamo detainees who have been held without charge “appear in open court where we can all sift out what we feel is really the truth and the judges can make a decision based on our Constitution.”

These 9/11 family members all say they agree that holding detainees without charge in Guantánamo is a betrayal of American values and they look forward to true justice being served in federal court.

“My son gave his life to save those trapped in the Twin Towers,” Welty says, “and it does not honor him that we violate our Constitution in retaliation for what happened on September 11.”

4. Having the 9/11 families weigh like this will calm the waters
on having the trial stateside, and put the right on mute

3. I hope this is true
I'm sure Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz will make the rounds about how 'legislating' terrorist crimes put the country in peril. Cheney always claimed that putting the terrorists on trial was the coward's approach.

6. Cheney is opposing trials for terrorists because he wants
to remain a free man.

A fair public trial first - but executed none the less in the end - sorry
