From Oconee County, the buzz is that the GOP incumbent is being forced to really work, getting party help. I say, Ken Campbell, Dean Dozen, you rock.
From Ken: "Maybe there is something to this whole “Democracy” thing!
Over the past few months, our DEAN DOZEN candidate, Ken Campbell, www.TakeBackOconee.com , has done truly amazing things here in South Carolina. To refresh your memory, here is a brief background on the battle Ken faced:
Oconee County, South Carolina, is a Republican hotbed. All members of the county council are Republicans. All state offices are held by Republicans. Our Congressman and Senator are both Republicans. During a time period when there were no new faces appearing on the political landscape, Ken heeded Governor Dean’s call to action and formulated a grassroots plan to compete head-to-head with a heavily PAC-funded incumbent.
What a difference six months and some grassroots organizing can make.
In 2002, the Democratic candidate raised only $2,000 (to his opponent’s $33,000). To date, and with the help of many DFA supporters nationwide, our campaign is approaching $20,000!! The South Carolina Education Association has endorsed Ken as their candidate for House District #1. (A serious coup, considering his opponent is a retired school teacher!)
The bi-partisan Conservation Voters of South Carolina and the Sierra Club have also lined up behind Ken.
Most importantly, Ken’s tireless door-to-door efforts are yielding the most fruit: Having reached over 4,000 voters so far, the BUZZ in Republican political circles in Oconee County is: THE INCUMBENT IS IN TROUBLE.
The situation is apparently so tenuous that the party is bringing in our Congressman to do a fundraiser and boost our opponent's campaign coffers. Ken is doing his part: He’s out knocking on doors. He’s been pounding the pavement now for TWO SOLID MONTHS… six, sometimes seven days a week.
People around here have not seen anything like this before – and because of Ken’s progressive ideas, straight talk and ability to connect with people almost immediately, HUNDREDS of yard signs are now sitting prominently on front lawns all over our county.
Republican leaders have been heard to comment, "How does this guy know all these people?" HA-HA! You get to know a LOT of people when you show up on their doorsteps!..."
