Sorry if this is a dupe.....I am totally committed to journalists right to NOT reveal their sources and I understand that journalism will only occur when people can speak off the record, but if someone intentionally misleads a news agency, then I think it's the duty of the news agency to expose the perpetrators.

3. I really don't think so because I think someone
who is in the know is desperately trying to let the world know what kind of person bush is and I think they are scared to death.

4. Agree
CBS has no loyalty to anyone who has set them up with fake documents. Having said that, I am not 100% convinced that they are fake.

5. Only when the sources don't lie
Edited on Thu Sep-16-04 02:25 PM by sparosnare
there's usually a "contract" of sorts with a source - so if CBS accepted the documents as real and they turn out to be fake, they have every right to out their source and NOT protect their anonimity.

I have a feeling about this - just a feeling. The memos are real (Killian wrote them himself after the fact as backup) and the source sent them in. I doubt Dan Rather and CBS would have aired their story with "fake" memos that would be so quickly disproven (or appear to be). They're not that stupid, especially when they know what's at stake.

So the source is out there and will eventually come out on their own. The memos will be real and the CONTENT of the memos will prove to be true.

I hope that's how it turns out anyway.

6. Funny, no one remembers bush* but they all remember memos.
Boy, if the guard guys just had the memories of the Swift Boar Liars this would all be cleared up.

7. WHY? It was up to them to verify the authenticity of them.
Outting their source won't do anything to fix their reputation. It might thrill democrats if it happens to be someone from the right -- but it does nothing for CBS except make them look like a bad news organization. Since when is it a crime to pass off phoney information to a reporter? Admittedly, Ashcroft might have passed a law against it that I'm unaware of - but I didn't think it was against the law.

9. There is no law for stupidity. CBS was certainly stupid if they didn't
vet these things everyway possible. I don't think they are fakes. But if they are, I think it may help the public understand why CBS took the bait if their source was exposed. But it may also make them look dumb then dumber.

10. That's a pretty big if, considering they are authentic.
Nobody has been able to match the type using a computer yet. (Unless you count reducing the scale 50% and saying, "look, the widths are nearly the same!")

It's a typewriter from the era, most likely an IBM Executive.

If it's a forgery, its better than anything the CIA or Rove could come up with. The forger would have to have intimate details of the events surrounding Bush at the time, be good at imitating the writing style of Killian, somehow lift a signature and superimpose it on type that matches the rest of the document without any cut lines showing, and individually distress each character so it is slightly different and exactly imitates the effects of a 1973 typewriter.

No, Killian wrote the memos and signed them himself. He hid their existence from his secretary.

11. I think Killian wrote them too
and kept them in his personal file. So who do you think sent them to CBS??
