The large Kerry/Edwards signs we had were stolen last night.
From 3 houses in our small block. They were not the little cheap ones given out by the local folks, you know the white background.
These were the large ones with the blue background given out at the Del Sandusky rally last week-end.

We have high visibility on our street to a lot of Republicans. They have no signs up yet for Bush.

Now they get stolen, all the signs in our block. We got very small white background ones, but they do not show up well.

2. Call the police, file a report, then call your local newspaper
Republicans stealing is nothing new, but makes for great story in newspapers.

21. LOL! Democratic dogs!
Perhaps a nice "Beware of dog" sign will also help.

Anyway, don't let the thieves get you down. I watched a grown woman (GOP, naturally) at try to force a kid off the road during a Labor Day parade. The kid was carrying a sign in support of our local Democratic congressman, he had permission to be in the parade, and the nasty woman did not. Fortunately, not all members of the GOP behave this way, but under the current regime, such boorishness is either winked at or celebrated.

So put up more signs. Put things in the window. Put it on the roof! Hang red, white and blue lights or ribbons or bunting up with slogans. You'll be fine.

The nastier they are, the more Kerry buttons I wear on my morning commute. Hang in there.

5. Put a small sticker on them (or write) ...
"Smile ... You are on camera" or something to that effect.

Make it small enough that it can't be deciphered from far away, but large enough that someone stealing it can see it.

It may make them think twice about doing that (since it is a crime). Nobody likes the honesty of video tape when it incriminates them.

Studies have shown that even the threat of video tape can drastically change ones behavior.

Cheers
Drifter

6. What about ink?
Especially that ink that you can't get rid of, like the one they have on some tagged clothes to prevent shoplifting (or in money bags, when robbing banks)*

*I have no experience in either shoplifting or robbery!

8. I feel your pain. (m)
I've ordered quite a number of signs to keep my yard supplied between now and Nov 2. It's pathetic really. And count me another mad Floridian.

9. Just try to focus on what a pain in the ass
it was to take them, stash them, and dispose of them. Seems like someone wasted a chunk of time that could have been put to much better use campaiging for his/her own candidate.

Sorry about the signs, though. Can they be replaced and put somewhere that would require a Tarzan-like effort to remove? Like on the roof or high up on a tree?

There was a thread a few weeks back about how to discourage sign meddlers. It had many creative methods to leave a "memorable" impression after messing with someone else's sign - my favorite involved printers ink and some dumbass pulling up in a BMW to damage the sign, then wiping his sticky, inky hands all over his leather jacket.

Surely there must be some fun things y'all can do to deter this behavior...
:)

P.S. Lots of dog poop piled around the stakes in the ground would be a smelly reminder to stay the hell away.

10. Fight back!
It was reported on my local Faux affiliate here in Portland KPTV 12:

Some teenagers stole a whole bunch of Veteran for Kerry signs in Lake Oswego (ultimate rich suburb of Portland), the cops caught them and they were charged! The showed his twenty(no kidding!) signs back up across his huge property line. Maybe this only works in wealthy areas, where the cops kiss your butt, I don't know.

But it was such a juxitopistion of images, Fox news, Lake Oswego, Veteran for Kerry, the cops being the good guys.

Good luck.

12. Yeah my spelling leaves something to be desired
And the spell check here takes so long for my post to go through...no patience for that.

But yeah, it's the unlikely images that stay in my mind!

14. That's funny...I didn't even notice how you spelled
it..but I try to be a rabidly good speller. I use google for spelling..you just type in the word and if it's wrong they say.."you mean so and so"..and I say "Yes, I mean so and so!" :D

13. I'd be really bummed if I had any Kerry/Edwards
signs in my yard and a slimey repuke stole them right out of my space!

I live in an apartment house so there's no way I will have one..but if I did I would certainly use the Hot Habanero trick to make my sign theives think twice the next time they are lookin' for Kerry signs.

I am going to get one of those magnetic yellow ribbons to put on my car to go with my Kerry/Edwards, Vote The Environment, and Dean For America stickers.

So many people in my small town have them and I think it sends a message that I want the Soldiers home safely..Not in a box!

Sorry for your Great sign loss, mf!:-(

20. Smear Habenero pepper oil all over the signs.
The oil is deadly. If you get it on your hands, you'll surely get it in your eyes eventually, and then LOOK OUT. Their eyes will burn like there's no tomorrow.

23. I did a search online. Can only find small signs to order.
I saw the print-off someone posted above, but I would rather order if we could.

Has anyone seen a place to order the larger ones, at least 36" wide?

We could keep some on hand in case.

25. Well, all 3 were stolen again.
We put signs up for the neighbors as well. By 10 last night they were all gone.

We talked to the police and it is rampant. Of course there is nothing they can do, but they are upset about it. We will start bringing them in at night.

I did a search, and there is a LOT of sign-stealing going on in Florida according to google. Pensacola area is really hard hit.

Get a low-light recording camcorder or hide in a tree or something or around the corner?

26. I get my signs tonight at the meeting. This is my plan.
After searching through my storage room for a caustic but not deadly to animals, kids etc. I came upon a length of clear plastic tubing. I'm going to plug one end, fill it with bleach, attach the other end plug to a monofiliment line firmly attached to the ground. Hopefully when they rip the sign out of my yard and throw it in their car enough bleach will remain in the tube to get on either them or in their car, hopefully both. Nothing like leaving a little reminder for them and it will make me smile just thinking about a very large bleach spot on their car seats and carpet.
