Vice presidential candidate John Edwards chose a sparsely attended church service in Detroit to deliver a blistering attack against the Bush-Cheney campaign for an ad that began airing this weekend.
The ad, paid for by the Progress for America Voter Fund, has aired in the key battleground states of Iowa and Wisconsin.
It shows images of Osama bin Laden, Mohammed Atta, one of the Sept. 11 hijackers, and former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and asks,
"Would you trust Kerry against the fanatic killers?" Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., heads the ticket.
Edwards, the senator from North Carolina, fought back Sunday morning.
"They are trying to exploit one of our greatest tragedies for personal gain," he said. "Sometimes during a campaign, it's important for us to speak out against immoral and unjust forces."
And while the pews may have been half-empty, the listening audience was likely far larger. The service at New St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Detroit was carried on the Internet.
