Sign the ACT Petition to prevent Ohio voter disenfranchisement.

Thanks to For PaisAn for this info. :hi:

Title: Desperation and 80 Pound Paper Stock in Ohio

Citing an arcane ruling that requires voter registration cards be printed on 80 pound stock paper, Blackwell is threatening to void registrations submitted on a lighter weight paper, demanding they re-apply. There is no time to reapply and thousands of voters could be left off the rolls.

This is not only unethical, it’s illegal. The 14th Amendment grants every citizen the right to vote—regardless of race, gender, creed, or paper stock.

Republicans in Ohio are scared—with good reason—ACT’s Get-Out-the-Vote effort is working --in Ohio we’re out-registering Republicans by 10 to 1.

SIGN THE PETITION

Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell
Members of the Ohio Controlling Board
Columbus, Ohio

We, the undersigned, in the name of democracy, demand that you immediately revoke your mandate that all voter registration applications be printed on 80 pound stock paper. This ruling is a flagrant violation of US Code, and disenfranchises thousands of newly registered voters.

In accordance with Title 42 Chapter 20 Subchapter I Section 1971 of US Code, “No person acting under color of law shall...deny the right of any individual to vote in any election because of an error or omission on any record or paper relating to any application, registration, or other act requisite to voting, if such error or omission is not material in determining whether such individual is qualified under State law to vote in such election.”

2. Done
and pass it on....

Today I’ve taken action to protect the vote in Ohio, where the Secretary of State Ken Blackwell is trying to refuse thousands of new voters the right to cast a ballot in the upcoming election—based on the weight of the paper of their application.

The 2004 election is going to be very close—and could come down to just a handful of votes in this key state.

Please join me in signing the “Paper Stock” Petition today and pass it on to everyone you know.

5. my message to Ken Blackwell
Shame on you Ken Blackwell. Born and raised in Cincinnati you turn your back on the African American community and stab your people in the back when they are suffering from 4 years of George Bush's reckless tax cuts for the wealthiest 1%. The Bush economy has been particularly hard on African Americans and now you, Ken Blackwell want to disenfranchise thousands of African Americans in Cleveland the poorest city in America and other cities in Ohio like Dayton and Cincinnati. What would Fred Shuttlesworth and Judge Nathaniel Jones say to you if only you would listen?

This has gotten ridiculous. What country do you think this is, anyway? We're a democracy, remember? "Why do you hate America?"
