October Surprise: Troops coming home
I have a feeling that we will be seeing some unexpected troop returns in October and further declaration things are going well in Iraq.

I can't say exactly why I imagine this might be the case but I do have some sources to tell me to expect early return of some troops that thought they were going to stay there longer.

We will have to wait and see.

1. That would be a pretty big flip-flop
Esp. considering the White House has stated that giving any timelines provides fodder for "terrorists" as the deadline nears or passes.

2. They already talked about Pentagon plan for shorter combat duty
The news just came out about the Pentagon considering shorter periods of combat duty because of the enlistment problems. Obviously a ploy to turn around some of the negativity about the war before the election. You are right, Bushco will do everything possible to put a more positive spin on the situation and try to look caring and responsive towards the troops to win votes.

3. There is active discussion that troop rotation is going to quicken
so you might get troops rotating more frequently. You'd have shorter tours but more frequency. Bad on two counts - less experienced troops and more costs. However, only a small portion of troops could be rotated in October and a whole new group would have to be rotated in to replace them - thereby negating any positive spin for Bush*.

4. doubtful
For starters, they've got a plan to mount a new offensive in Fallujah immediately after the elections

My brother's guard unit has been activated for the second time since 2002, and they;ve been told to expect to get shipped to Iraq right around Christmastime. The logistics of having a major troop pull-out in the next few weeks would make doing so damn near impossible.
