BREAKING: Voter Purging in New Orleans = 47,000
Months ago a list of "infrequent voters" was put together. Articles were written and the people in charge made a point to make it very clear that these people were NOT being purged. Well, guess what...

just spoke with the people at the Kerry HQs and the news broke this afternoon. They are trying to deal with it.

Sorry, no link b/c no media agencies have had time to print this yet. I'm sure I'll have links about it tomorrow.

1. Their Internals Must Pretty Bad If they Have To Steal That Many Votes...
...in Louisiana!

I had always assumed that Boosh could win Louisiana handily without cheating.
The Roverer must not be so sure.

3. They probably can
There are some rules about this, but I think they vary by state.

6. I still don't understand that there are rules that if you do not vote
all the time, you can't vote. Well in that case if you are a new voter you can't vote...well then when can you vote, when you become a republican..

13. I'm looking into it
the Campaign is addressing it and there are plenty of lawyers involved. I had a bad feeling about this months ago. People became concerned and there was public outcry. The people in charge calmed everyone by explaining that the list was not going to be purged.

How interesting. NOW...with just 5 days left for people to address this, they're gonna pull such a stunt.

New Orleans is the ONLY chance Louisiana has to go blue.

8. Most states have laws that a person is purged from the rolls if
they have not voted in a certain number of years. They send a letter to the voter that says that if the person doesn't contact the elections office they will be purged.

The purging process does have a legitimate purpose. It take the dead and those who have moved out of town off of the rolls, making fraud more difficult.

12. Under the Motor Voter Act of 1993 a person cannot be purged for not voting
as log as a person can be verified living at the address he or she is registered at that person is supposed to stay on the rolls indefinately. People that the post office has shown as having moved can be removed after a time. Funny time for LA to take action though.

14. you're right...BUT
what if these people have changed their addresses without changing t heir voter registration informaion? Maybe these are the people being purged. I don't have all the details. I DO know that in the last few weeks the registrars office has refused to take voter registrations that were changes of address b/c it was "within an election cycle".

Many people I've spoken with do not live at the address they are registered under. The law says they'd have to have moved in the last 90 days to be allowed to vote at their previous location. I'm making sure that people have that information when they ask me.

Seems to just be another way to disenfranchise people. When you moved within the city, how high on your priority list is changing your voter registration address? Before having this information, for me it wasn't very high at all.

4. I lived in New Orleans for years. . . .
Now, I don't want to make light of your assertions, but I lived in N.O. for a long, long time, and I worked on a lot of campaigns there. New Orleans is a Democratic bastion, and it would shock me that they would purge the voter rolls. Now, if you were talking about Shreveport (Republican hell), I would not be the slightest bit surprised. Of course, you may be right, but I certainly hope not.

5. Been gone a while FB, but this used to be a legal practice in LA
Couldn't have anything to do with your current stellar example of a mayor, now, could it?

11. In Oregon
if you don't vote for 5 years...you are notified you'll be purged and you have to re register. It's the law.
