Kudos to Lehrer
I was as angry as anybody over the ridiculous press moderators of the democratic primary debates, but I have to say Leherer really nailed this one.

For the whole time, he had the candidates talking about what I wanted to hear them talking about.

Good job, Jim.

4. Thanks for starting this thread
We are so lucky we had Lehrer for this debate - the guy is a class act. No Judy Woodruff "Look at me I'm the Star" theatrics. No cheap shots, no "Gotcha" questions.
My god, focused like a lser on questions that actually matter to this country - who woulda thunk it?

6. He was near invisible--as a moderator should be
He did help Bush out a little bit with rebuttals (he seemed to get more than Kerry), but still a solid stint at moderating.

11. Well, good God he had to do that.
Bush was so pathetically floundering, it was a simple act of mercy. All in all, great job on Lehrer's part.

8. I agree....but....
I do think when bush* asked for that rebuttal of the rebuttal, he should not have allowed it - actually 'scold' him if you will...I know that isnt Leher's style, so I dont hold it against him too much. But if anyone saw his firmness about how intent he was on making sure the rules were followed in the prep in the minutes before the debate (on CSPAN), I really had my hopes when bush* asked for it, that Lehrer would not have allowed it...but other than that little thing, I agree...excellent questions.

14. It's true that Bush got rebuttals when he asked
but the format allowed a 30 second rebuttal followed by a 30 second follow up rebuttal.

So, in essence, every time Bush whined for a chance to answer, he gave Kerry an extra 30 seconds for the last word -- which Kerry won every time.

I think JL understood the implications of the format beter than Bush and gave him enough rope every time.

10. A debate moderator , in my mind, is much like a soccer ref...
...If the game is over, and you really didn't notice they were there, then they did a good job. I didn't notice him at all, which is exactly what I wanted from him.

12. Really good post.
Lehrer asked the questions, & then got out of the way. Exactly what a moderator should do.

And the questions were good, balanced, & not slanted to help or hurt either candidate.

Congrats, Jim Lehrer. The American people were the winners tonight.
