1. Harvest Homecoming here today
right on the courthouse square. I should be able to wander by and sample public opinion there. I'll check my office, too, but since we're 100% Democrat (including the young fellow I helped register to vote), I doubt if anything is said. But I'll keep you posted.

30. I called in to 1400 KLIN,in Lincoln Nebraska.
I said that Bush sounded like a whiny frat boy, trying to explain why he drove the family car into a swimming pool. "The world is a safer place because I drove into that pool." I also said he sounded like Peter Pan,trying to get us to believe in Tinkerbell. "If you don't believe in the policy,it tain't gonna work." Finally I said that Kerry played both school principal, and Captain Hook,as he gave the wayward boy a spanking.

since they brought hannity on. I emailed them on there right wing bias including a few quotes. On the air they read my email & basically called me a liar. I called them & gave them date & time. They had to apologize on the air. That was the last day I turned them on.

15. talking points
#1 We saw the next President of the United States last night, and it was President Kerry.

#2 No doubt who was clear, who answered the question, and who has the judgement to be President.

#3 I feel hope for the first time that America may be a leader in the World again.

#4 Bush was defensive.

#5 Bush had 30 minutes of rehearsed material for a 90 minute debate.

#6 Bush is living in a pretend world, we can't resolve our problems by pretending. Pretending is no substitute for planning and preparation.

Unfortunately, I work in an Democratic work place and have no place to use these talking points.

20. Strange silence seldom heard in west Texas
this a.m. Its the sound of "shit, I can't even *claim* he did well!"

This from people who always claim the economy is *really good!" (just not around here...), that go on and on and on about what a "Good Christian Man"(tm) Bush* is, and who think that the war *might* not have been planned very well (they fault the CIA) but...we have to stay forever to beat them crazy A-rabs (last phrase is a parody of attitude--some of the comments are more explicitly racist).

I love the sound of *victory* in the morning!!!!!!

21. Two opinions in in my office
The intern, who is a Bush supporter, was reluctant to admit that Kerry won. She said Bush looked "off" and would do better. Okayyy...

The other person I talked to, who considered himself to be an independent, said neither person gave a breakout performance, but Bush came across as looking condensening. He said Kerry could have done better.

My office is fairly conservative, so I consider these reponses to be breakthoughs. Kerry did great last night. Just give it some time to seep into the national consciousness.

Let's hope the "Bush is a liar who can't be trusted" message sticks with the majority of the 55 million folks who were watching last night.

25. Discussion with my boss
Boss is voting for Kerry (voted for * last time, but mainly b/c Gore insulted pharm. companies). Her DH "currently doesn't like either candidate", but I don't know for sure who he's voting for. Traditionally Repub though.

"Bush did OK but he only had 30 min. of material." "Kept repeating the same things... even was saying 'BROKEN RECORD'." "We both mostly kept silent, out of respect for each other."

I'm working up the courage to approach boss's DH. She won't even tell me what he has against Kerry or what he agrees with Bush about, so I'm flying blind. I asked her if the John Eisenhower endorsement might sway him; she just said she doesn't know what might sway him.

For what it's worth, 7-11 in my town has an official Bush coffee cup and an official Kerry cup. The Kerry was almost empty, and the Bush rack was almost full. The woman at the counter gave me a sour look as I bought my Kerry cup, but I just smiled at her.

28. From an Iowa doughnut shop this morning
Whenever I want to know the "lay of the land" I go buy doughnuts and listen in on the conversations from the "morning enlightenment clubs" that meet there each day.

There was a resolute anger about two things:

1) * using the word "folks" in reference to terrorists -- again.

2) * saying he'd like to leash his daughters. Who's head didn't flash that photograph of Lynndie England at Abu Gharib?

Most people found it enjoyable and most people seemed to have had some change of heart in relation to Kerry. More snippets of conversation:

"Are they really building 14 permanent bases in Iraq? I didn't know about that."

"More of the same -- I think that's true and I don't know if I want more of the same."

"* didn't even try to answer the question about further military advancements in Iran or Korea."

"I looked up the members of the coalition last night and what Kerry said was true... it isn't a real coalition."

"I think * was so intent on continuing the flip-flop business that he blew the whole debate."

"Speeches might work well on the campaign trail, but when you are one-on-one with your opponent you need to be better prepared."

"Why did * keep pausing as he was talking? Was he checking notes for answers?"

"* just looked annoyed to be there." This was answered by a fellow I know to be a staunch * supporter, "I'm sure he was. Who'd want to be locked in a room with Kerry? The smell alone must be horrible." (I got a big smile after hearing that... this guy is articulate with the issues & this is the best he could offer, a juvenile attack. LOL!)

33. My take.
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 11:22 AM by newportdadde
Well my office is pretty non political but its mostly older white guys(mainframe programmers) so of course with their salaries and their wives working etc most are Republicans for the cash.

However two of them today were talking quite a bit both freepers. One is a middle aged grey haired guy who likes to use a lot of very slowly prounced large words because he likes to listen to himself talk.

Heh I’ve heard this guy on the phone talking to his wife actually say stuff like “We need to initiate a plan to leverage our strengths as we decide how to.. blah blah...” Etc etc.. you know bs corporate speak.. even to his family lol. The other guy is spoiled guy about my age(late 20s).

Some of the comments..

“Kerry’s idea of a coalition makes no sense because the UN has no real power and small countries should be allowed to tell big powerful countries like us what to do”….

“We are safer because the terrorists could have just kept attacking us these past years but they haven’t so that’s why we are safer.”

“A war like this takes a long time to win.”

44. My line all morning
In my e-mails to my freeper relatives, to all the people I saw at the physical therapists office and to the people at the grocery store that I work at where i stopped on the way home -

"Gee, your guy was terrible last night! He looked nervous and he was so defensive! Kerry was poised and articulate and Bush just kept babbling and repeating himself." Shake head regretfully. "He seemed like he was crumbling under the pressure. Not what I want in a leader!"

Nobody has been able to come back with anything of substance. As a matter of fact, the people I spoke to in person, no matter who they support, had to agree that Kerry came off far better! (I've yet to get a reply from the e-mails and don't expect any!)

46. Well...my one co-worker, who i'm not sure what to think of him....
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 02:12 PM by MsTryska
he voted for perot
he thinks cheney is the smartest guy on the field
he doesn't like our current tax system (ergo perot, i guess)
he didn't watch the debates
he doesn't like Kerry's looks
he thinks Edwards is hot. (well maybe not him, but he can see why women love him - wife's influence no doubt)
he also said if he were president, he would make sure education was free to everyone.
he doesn't believe in welfare.

he and i had a bit of convo. i keep my politics very low profile, altho most know i'm far liberal than them.

someone had brought up the debates, an undecided asian woman that makes lots of money....she thought they were cool and it wasunfair to not like kerry because of how he looks - i think she might be a closet kerry fan, like me.

anyways, my coworker agreed - i was busy du'ing polls so i was quiet. when the taxes came up i mentioned that the way things were going taxes would have to be raised to cover the deficit, either federally or state. He believed we needed to cut spending, and i agreed on that too - the conversation then meandered ot iraq, and i brought up the debates again, and mentioned bush looking agitated and confused, and not handling it very well.

he said the thing he likes about bush is that he thinks befor ehe speaks...I said, "not last night he didn't - he had a couple of pauses, but it was more like he was searching for the right soundbite - he kept repeating himself,

he said, yeah i heard that too.

and then we moved on to cheney and how edwards trumps cheney in the hottie department, and he said, but cheney's smarter than all of 'em, i think.

I said, yeah - and evil-er too!

and he said, yeah, he is smarter and eviler - i said, i'd prefer less evil-er. *lol*

then we talked about the history of middle east policy and how clinton had so many opportunities to this or that....i mentioned that if Congress hadn't been so caught up in figuring out whether clinton got a BJ or not, and wasted the energy and resources we had, we might have bene able to spend some time on it. He agreed - but he never has forgiven clinton for cheating on his wife.

so i still haven't figured it out. he's 100% north georgia redneck, buit i still detect a populist streak. maybe he's a zell miller dem. i guess that would make sense.

that was the extent of it. so i still haven't pegged him.
