Andrew Young backing down on Clark endorsement?
This is from the Atlanta paper yesterday. I'm not sure what's going on with this:

"Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young plans to campaign with Wesley Clark in South Carolina on Sunday, but refused Thursday to say the joint appearances will constitute an endorsement of the retired general's presidential campaign"

"Asked whether he would appear with any other presidential candidates in South Carolina, Young said, "Probably not. But I might in Georgia or Texas. I don't know.''

1. Campaign appearances with him
somehow translates to 'backing down on endorsement?"

Young to campaign with Clark in S.C.

Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young plans to campaign with Wesley Clark in South Carolina on Sunday, but refused Thursday to say the joint appearances will constitute an endorsement of the retired general's presidential campaign.

"An endorsement is telling other people what to do and I don't like to do that,'' Young said in a telephone interview. "I don't think I ever made an endorsement.''

3. True.
But "Georgia and Texas" has a Deanish ring to it. Good second choice.

2. looks like Dean lost Brenda Lee of Spartanburg......
<<Endorsements are also not forever. State Rep. Brenda Lee of Spartanburg, an influential African-American lawmaker, endorsed Dean early in the campaign, but on Saturday announced her support for Gephardt.

"I made the decision after the Dean people didn't see fit to return my phone calls,'' she said. "I figured they didn't need my support anymore.'' >>>

4. We're running into that in Georgia a little bit too.
It seems some legislators endorsement is tied to a certain amount of ahh, how to say this delicately... special treatment.

Naive me thought it was based on which candidate one identified with most closely. I know better now.

6. Ah, I see no purpose in naming names here.
I am told that this is just the way it is, and the way it has been forever. Presumably, all candidates have to deal with this.

It's not a huge scandal, we're just talking about rides to events/fundraisers, direct contact with high level campaign people instead of normal channels, stuff like that.

No, c'mon, you didn't really believe that, did you? Because yes, that would be very naive. Real people endorse on that basis, but hardly any politicians do. With them it's always quid pro quo.

Why do you suppose Kucinich has a stellar lineup of endorsements from real people, but hardly any politicians?

13. If thats true
What do you think gore was promised for his endorsement? And wouldn't that fly in the face of gore saying he did it because he thought dean was the one that could beat *?

14. dean lost an endorsement from
an African-American lawmaker because the Dean people didn't see fit to return her phone calls?

Do you have a link?

I doubt this, but if true, this doesn't sit well IMHO.

7.  Young should have waited a little longer before endorsing
He was as caught off guard as everyone else by Dean's unexpected ability to oupoll his opponents in areas of the South.

9. I think that this is even better because
"An endorsement is telling other people what to do and I don't like to do that,'' Young said

Leaves these kind of dignitaries to campaign with the candidate of their choice, while still being able to bash Gore for what he did.

Brilliant!

OBJECTS ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR

11. Headline doesn't reflect the content of the post.
A quote from Young in the article:
"I don't think I ever made an endorsement."

There is nothing about backing down. The post headline is deceptive. The article headline is:

Young to campaign with Clark in S.C.

That's good for Clark, no?

12. Yeah, what's up with that, huh?
Just what is it you think Young knows about Clark that would make him change his mind in such a short time? Can you read Young's mind for that matter?

15. Young didn't change his mind. He's appearing with Clark.
The article is entirely Pro-Clark. There is nothing in it about backing out of any endorsement. Young is appearing with Clark and Rangel in SC. Can it get much better?

The thread poster has complete misinterpreted the article, IMO.
