She spent half the debate talking about Iraq, some time talking about friggin lawsuits, this question about AIDS...

Which is, of course, a moderator's job. The questions he asked were brief and not politically "loaded." Not only did Gwen's quesitons favor Cheney, she seem to be insistent on inserting herself as an equally important third character in the stage play, which Lerher certainly did not.

If this is the best y'all can do, then the post-debate spin will quickly be turned around by RW media on the basis of core Dems defensive reaction.

It currently has the debate at a tie with a distinct edge to Edwards among undecideds.

Meaning most Dems did not tune in, and are still easily susceptible to post-debate spin.

Meaning this sort of defensiveness (I see the mods are locking debate threads that say Edwards did poorly, what message does that send to those of us who thought he did well?) is counterproductive.

Me, I think the debate was a draw but Edwards probably introduced himself to alot of undecided women who APPARENTLY thought he did good. If they weren't watching the debate, his sexiness wouldn't have mattered anyhow. For us guys, he probably did not deliver the knockout punch so many Edwardsistas were lounging around predicting. I cited about three points where I thought Edwards pulled punches. I almost felt like I was watching "Jeopardy" I was trying to feed lines to Edwards so often when he appeared ill-at-ease. Cheney's tough-guy routine was so predictable and puncturable, it was the classic bully stance and I wish Edwards had broken it.

I saw not much evidence of the devilishly effective trial lawyer we were promised, except in the brief effective closing statement. In fact I was a bit worried about Edwards' health, at times he sounded like Michael J. Fox with some kind of early onset stammer that could be affecting his speaking style. This is probably the number one thing that kept him from absolutely slaying Cheney. Not to say Dick Cheney's Darth Vader impersonation didn't offset that.

All in all, Edwards didn't really hurt Bush, but generated a slew of angrey-Cheney soundbites destined to bite Cheney in the butt after the spin cycle has wound down, and effectively presented himself as on the same rhetorical plane as Cheney with regards to foreign policy issues.

A while ago I posted a couple posts saying DUers were failing to lower
expectations for the 2nd Debate. Blithely going on about how Kerry and
Edwards will absolutely crush their opponents can and should be backed
up by effusive praise of the outcome...If that is not possible for you,
then learn to play the expectations game.

...not complaints about Gwen Ifill. Why do you think it's called "Washington Weak"?

And i'm pretty sure Democrats in the media aren't going to talk about her at all anyway. They will rightly say that Edwards won and that Cheney's a lier.

MS. IFILL: Well, as David Brooks pointed out in The New York Times yesterday, in Europe, Michael Moore goes about very widely bashing America and bashing Americans as being stupid and not knowing how to put one foot in front of the other and he's received like a conquering hero. They love this. They want to hear this. Now, that's fine. They think he's a documentarian. They think he is bringing them facts. Now, they don't vote in American elections, but there is a wider question to be raised about the impact of Americans who take that abroad in a time of war.
