Why OB/GYNs ??????
What is up with bush and cheney? cheney brought them up last night and in bush's "huge" speech today, he talked about them again. Did I miss something? Are gynecologists part of some hidden swing group? Do the repugs think this will attract women? I realize they can't love their female patients but this is really odd.

5. It's meant to target the votes of women...
... lots of women have regular contact with their OB/GYNs, and many might be influenced to vote in a particular way if they thought their favored doctor weren't able to provide services.

22. I don't know about rapists
but I spent several years developing medical devices for use in womens healthcare and I worked with dozens of OB/GYNs and I have to agree that they tend to be very sexual (I worked almost exclusively with male Drs). I have also worked with orthopods, cardiologists and GPs but the gyns were the biggest pervs. Makes sense.

23. it is an attempt to SCARE women that there won't be anyone there to
deliver their babies. In reality it is because some IDIOTS/ WOMEN HATERS go into OB/GYN and sometimes the babies pay the price and have birth injury, consequently higher malpractice insurance rates. I haven't seen it actually drive anyone out of the field except for real baddies. Like there was a heart surgeon working at Walter Reed who was legally blind and incompetent to boot. Damaged a few people. Finally forced out of the OR

19. Oh, now that is nasty!
But possibly true.

I don't generally talk about gynecology with women that I know, but everyone with whom I've spoken about this issue thinks it's discomforting at best, downright perverse at worst. I don't think they're scoring points with the ladies, frankly.

a lot of doctors are getting out of the birthing baby business. their insurance way higher than all other doctors and it is hard for them to stay in busniness.it is getting harder and harder in some areas to find an obgyn

18. It's a tactic, a big one. A real big one. Rove was OBGYN's to
encourage their pataints to vote for Bush. And it will work because an OBGYN examination is the most intimate proceedure between Doc and women. No, I'm not crazy, the Psychology backs it in terms of the Stockholm effect. Seriously, this needs to be exposed. The "Love" Bush comment was no accident, really. It's Psy opps against women!!!!! to vote for Bush!!!!!

20. Women voters

The point of each and every time is what campaigning is all about, you give the same speech and the same message over and over and over. Anyone will tell you, when you have gotten to the point you are sick of hearing yourself say the same things over and over again, voters are getting close to hearing your message.

24. OB/GYNs have the highest malpractice insurance, partially because
any disability that happens to a new baby gets projected out through an entire life for purpose of damage awards.

25. But why are jufies so friendly?
I still don't understand why OBGYN's either. I had a miscarriage many years ago too, and I was devastated, but I didn't blame the doctor!

What has coused women, or better said, mothers & fathers, faulting the doctors?

As my doctor told me back in 1966, sometimes God corrects his mistakes. I believed it then and still do today.

29. because Edwards
sued a lot of OBGYNs. So they think that most OBGYNS will be on their side. Somehow I believe they are wrong--the Edwards lawsuits were justified. Edwards sued because the OBGYNs were performing vaginal deliveries--which Edwards showed causes cystic fibrosis. He got several multi-million dollar judgments out of OBGYNS--now a lot of them will not DARE to do vaginal deliveries which is a good thing because obviously if he won the lawsuits--then they were doing a bad thing.

The republicans think that some OBGYNs will hold this against Edwards. I do not think so. They get paid MORE when they do a C-section and they are helping to prevent Cystic Fibrosis. So there is nothing but good in what Edwards did. This will backfire on the republicans BIGTIME.

30. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease..
you must be thinking of something else, unless these cases occurred before 1989, when the cystic fibrosis gene was discovered. A c-section would not help these patients.

C-sections, btw, are generally not considered safer than vaginal deliveries. Anytime you cut someone's abdomen open, there is a risk of a whole lot of other problems occuring. It usually requires more intensive anesthesia, a much greater risk factor, than a vaginal delivery. Women have been having babies by vaginal delivery throughout history; it's the method nature designated, not the MDs.

33. No--Edwards definitely
sued on the grounds that the negligence of the Drs in performing vaginal deliveries was a risk factor in the children having cystic fibrosis. Check it out on Lexus-Nexus. Cases such as this comprised the major part of his legal practice and earned him many millions of dollars. Juries agreed with him, and he won--so he must have been correct.

Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 09:52 PM by Princess Turandot
causing MDs to go out of the OB business, because of high jury verdicts on OB cases. It is factually true that there are areas of the country where the availability of OBs is becoming a problem, and frequently it's attributed to the economics of the OB's practice, of which malpractice insurance is a larger & larger expense. You cannot have admitting privileges to a hospital w/o malpractice insurance, so if the MD feels it isn't worth it to pay the premium, they will stop delivering babies. I believe they can get insurance just as gynecologists, which is much lower.

However, what doesn't get considered in these discussions is that while an OBG might stop delivering babies because of malpractice insurance, you don't hear of too many insurance companies going out of business even though they pay out these large verdicts. Something is getting lost in the mix, here.

The implication being that OB/GYNS can't just relax and be themselves when they have all these women launching malpractice suits against them.
