Well, as I am you basic rag-ass writer making do from one paycheck to another, I wouldn't know why some landed rich guy would take up for the poor. Perhaps because his education gave him the knowledge of right from wrong?

As I am a white male in America, born into the middle class, I was born on second base. I suppose I could have lived my life thinking I had hit a double, that everything I had was deserved merely because it was so. Perhaps my education gave me the knowledge of right from wrong? Thank the Jesuits.

As for why a true member of the elite would look to the poor, I direct you with all seriousness to the life of Robert Kennedy. Bobby had all that life could ask, and two beloved older brothers besides. Bobby was a devout commie-hunter, the right hand man of Nixon and McCarthy. Bobby was John's assassin, his one-eyed killer, his fixer, the ruthless one.

And then John got his head blown off. And Bobby knew woe.

And then Bobby went and found the poor, the desperate, black, hispanic, scrabbing half-citizens who time had forgot. Bobby hauled them all screaming onto the American stage and said look, these are my people.

He was in Indianapolis the night MLK was shot. All across America, riots burned from the rage of that murder. There was peace in Indianapolis, though, because Bobby spoke these exact words, by Aeschylus, like a prayer:

They line the graves with careful white bricks, and lovingly smooth over the earth, atop those forlorn roadside graves, graves, if you will, in the flower pot areas of their local 7/11 equivalents. Not the graveyards--I fear they are too full now.

She died, perhaps, in the car her daddy gave her for her graduation from college or high school....

She died, perhaps, in the car a loving husband bestowed upon her at their 20th wedding anniversary... Perhaps her grandkids bought her that deadly car.

She died, perhaps, in the car she bought herself with the money she made as a lawyer or a baker.

Or perhaps in a taxi or her best friend's car.

She died.

And she died BADLY. She lies twisted and broken, burnt black and naked, her clothes and hair all burnt away, her skin burnt black, in the ruins of that car, all dignity gone, while Iraqi men pull her from the wreckage, naked for all the world to see on GettyImages. And we will never know her name, never see her smiling photograph, never know the anguish of her family, friends, and neighbors, and we will NEVER say this was OUR fault, never understand the bitter rage that causes THEM to want to kill US.

They, of course, are TERRORISTS, whilst WE, of course, are fighting EEEEEEEEEVIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLL! And she is still dead, her family still mourns, if they even KNOW yet. Her children cry, her parents wail, and her old man picks up an RPG or an AK47.
