Being on Black Entertainment Television doesn't quite have the same prestige it did when it was actually run by blacks. In addition to the immediate removal of Smiley, the talk show Teen Summit was also cancelled--mustn't have the young black voice on the national airwaves!

10. He looks and sounds very good
The closeup of him during his answers is favorable. I think it's very effective. It's bringing out the best in his features. We don't get to see him this way so it motivated me to post the "style" observation. He's also very clear with his answers. Strong and assured and as usual on top of the facts.

14. He's sounding good specifically...
The interviewer asked him if the democrats have begun to take the black vote for granted etc.

He responded that that perception has begun to creep in and he has done everything he can to prove that's not the case, he listed off a laundry list of big name African Americans in government that he had reached out to for support, said some other stuff, answered it solidly.

Then the interviewer said that he'd been speaking with a young african-american who said he wouldn't vote for either 'rich white man' since they just don't get it.

Kerry was very strong, he said he did 'get it' and pointed to his experiences with a program in Harlem that taught young people skills etc and that he went back to Washington, put it into a bill and now the program is used across the country to the benefit of minorities. He then drew a sharp distinction between himself and Bush admitting that yes he was privelaged and is wealthy, but he has moved from his position of privelage to try and extend the same benefits to everyone whereas Bush has been more concerned with just repaying his buddies.

Now he's tying it up, speaking about his anger over Florida, the need for young people to vote, his plan, etc etc.

Good stuff from the 5-10 minutes i saw.

13. Very strong
Good answer to question, isn't he just like Bush, another rich privileged white guy?

He admits he's rich and privileged, but points out he wants to open up the opportunities he got to everyone else, while Bush wants to reserve those privileges for people who already enjoy them.

This is the biggest difference these days between Democrats and Republicans (other than the insane switcheroo on the question of deficits): Democrats who have climbed the ladder want to extend a hand below to people still on the lower rungs, while Republicans who have climbed the ladder (or who were born on the upper rungs) want to kick everyone below them off the ladder and then haul it up behind them. I wish we could make this point without the Republican motherfuckers and their parrot-whores in the media immediately squawking "Class warfare! Class warfare! Awwwk! Wanna cracker!"

18. Hee hee
It sounds great. Thanks for the recap y'all.

Goodness, John Edwards worked hard and earned his wealth...what did Bush ever do?

Wealthy Democrats have a history of having a CONSCIENCE and being optimistic and open enough to say "we did this; you can, too." They realize this country can be stronger for it.

Republicans = "I got mine; tough break for you."

24. You think it's EASY
choosing the right parents and having such unearned wealth simply dumped upon you? You think it's EASY going out partying every night? You think it's EASY running companies into the ground and constantly being bailed out by friends of Daddy's?

Actually...you're right, it IS easy.

Never mind.

said that Edwards was good on the "rehearsed" answers. He acted like it killed him even to say that....

22. What is that odd spin I hear sometimes
That Democrats are trying to convince blacks that they need a hand up, that they can't do anything on their own without Democratic help in a condescending way? When did the GOP start spinning that one?

29. I have it on TIVO

and will watch it after the debate tonight.

I am African American.
I think the most telling part is that Kerry agreed to come on BET.
He could have left that show alone.

Bush would never want to appear before a Black audience such as BET.
His base would get very upset and so would he.
Other than his wife Condi and Paige, Judge? Thomas and Colin, who are his black friends?

He has NONE that he can call on for advice.

Cheney was clueless about how he would reach out to a divided country. He thought the moderator meant the Congress!
That burned me because he never even dreamed that the moderator could mean reaching out to minorities.

When Edwards got in that zinger about Cheney not voting for Meals On Wheels,Head Start and MLK's birthday, that spoke volumes to the minority communities!

You could tell that Edwards cared enough to understand that those were programs that should have been NEVER voted against.

Bravo for Kerry. He is no BIG DOG but he is On The Way!
